The Coast Guard has recused eight people whose boat took on water off the Mendocino Coast. The 32-foot fishing vessel “The Samurai”, which had set off Thursday morning from Noyo Harbor, was about a mile off shore near Westport when the crew radioed for help around about 12:30 p.m. A Coast Guard lifeboat launched from the Noyo River and a nearby civilian boat pulled up and took six of the people while two stayed on board to keep trying to pump out the water. When the Coast Guard arrived they transferred over an engineer and a dewatering pump, which kept the vessel afloat so the Coast Guard could escort it back to the Noyo.

A popular stretch of the Russian River in Sonoma County is staying closed to swimming through the weekend due to high bacteria levels. Test results returned this morning showed total coliform concentrations remained slightly elevated at Monte Rio Beach. The next round of tests results will not be available until Monday and the deputy Health Officer for the County tells the Press Democrats they are hopeful that round will be clear enough to open the beach. In the meantime they say area is open but they recommend no swimming and if you kayak avoid ingesting any water, and bring fresh water for your pets so they don’t drink it.
