Clearlake Police are investigating a fatal traffic accident. Andres Chavez-Valencia was killed Wednesday night on Olympic Drive west of Highway 53. Police say a preliminary investigation determined Chavez-Valencia was heading east on Olympic at a high rate of speed when he crossed the double yellow lines and collided head-on with an SUV driven by Annette Wheeler. Wheeler and her daughter were able to get out of their vehicle and were taken to a hospital with moderate injuries. But Chavez-Valencia was trapped in his car and head to be extricated by Lake County Fire Protection District firefighters. He was unconscious then they got him and was taken to Adventist Health Clear Lake where he was pronounced dead.

Fire has damage the Applewood Inn in Guerneville. An electrical issue touched off the fire around 4am today at the resort along Highway 116. The Monte Rio Fire Chief says the fire started in the ceiling of the downstairs laundry and storage room beneath the restaurant and most of the damage was limited to the laundry and storage rooms as well as one wall in the restaurant. He estimated about $50,000 in loss of items in the building to smoke and heat damage and another $50,000 in structural damage. No one was inside the restaurant at the time, The Sonoma County Health Department has already visited the restaurant and a spokesman for the resort says they can re-open for dinner service on Monday night.
