The only foreign language translator for the Superior Court of Mendocino County has resigned, protesting his pay and benefits. The Daily Journal reports the interpreter, Tim Baird had his take home pay cut last year by nearly 8% or $500 a month, the cut back goes into his pension instead. The wages in question are part of union negotiations with the state for the region he works in which covers the Bay Area and Mendocino County. Apparently the negotiations have been continuing for a year. But the newspaper reports Baird and other court interpreters started getting benefits 12 years ago. The Judicial Court Executive Officer says the new contract offer is generous. Baird had been seeing about ten cases a day as a Spanish interpreter and the only interpreter employed by the Mendocino County court.

Even though it’s pretty warm now, the Lake County Planning Commission has approved a warming shelter for the winter…There will be 24 overnight guests allowed at the Seventh Day Adventist Church between December and March. The church has acted in this capacity in the past, but it was temporary. Residents near the church have been speaking out about trespassing and public safety after a stabbing a couple years ago. The applicant for the permit from the church, Reverend Shannon Kimball-Auth says they’ll be updating some of their rules to prevent any issues. They also plan to have meetings before and after opening the shelter for the community to solve any issues before they happen.

Several small fires along the 101 in Sonoma County have been contained. The fires in a rural neighborhood in Geyserville were threatening several homes. Fire officials say they started in the grass on the south side of the highway, flames from a trio of fires moving up steep terrain towards homes and a lodge. Several firefighters on the ground along with an air attack stopped forward movement and no homes were damage. One fire got to the edge of a deck of one home, but it was spared. The fires reported around 11 a.m. yesterday, were contained by 5:40 p.m. The fires happened during extreme heat, with temperatures hitting nearly 100. Investigators trying to figure out how the fires started.

We are under an excessive heat warning. The Mendocino County Office of Emergency Services says they will be monitoring the temperatures this week with Ukiah temps expected to be at 108 today and 103 tomorrow. Covelo could get to 110 today and 108 tomorrow with Lakeport possibly reaching 109 today and a touch cooler tomorrow at 104. Temperatures could hover in the triple digits through Friday.

Marijuana cultivation back on the agenda for the Lake County Board of Supervisors. The board meets at 9 a.m. at the Lake County Courthouse. According to the agenda, 10am is the time for continuation of a public hearing held over from June 27th about the ordinance to amend Article 72 of the Lake County Code to allow the outdoor collective cultivation of medical cannabis in Rural Lands and to create a certification of compliance process for cannabis cultivation. If you cannot attend the meeting you can watch it on the county website.

Coffee with the Congressman on the agenda in Lakeport. Congressman Mike Thompson is having his meet and greet at the Lake County Courthouse, next Thursday, Aug. 10th at 3p. Those who want to visit with Thompson are encouraged to come and speak. It’s also a good time to find out about the services available to constituents through the Congressman’s offices. He represents the Fifth Congressional District, including all or part of Contra Costa, Lake, Napa, Solano and Sonoma counties. His big issues are finance, guns and the Wine Caucus.

A woman’s body’s been found in Yosemite. Police say the woman had been hiking the Pacific Crest Trail first. A spokesperson for Yosemite National Park confirmed the death in the northwestern side of the park. Her name and age have not been released. It’s a week after the body of a tourist from Japan who was also hiking the Pacific Crest Trail was found, but that body was in a river in Kings Canyon National Park in Central California. Officials say there’s been a lot of runoff after the record winter snowfall in the Sierra Nevada which has made rivers swift and treacherous.

State regulators are checking out California’s dams after the massive failure at the Oroville Dam spillway in February. 93 dams have been assessed and will now be double checked. The Warm Springs Dam at Lake Sonoma and the Coyote Dam at Lake Mendocino, which deliver Russian River water to hundreds of thousands, those managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages those though, not California. There are yearly inspections of Warm Springs and Coyote which are designed different than the Oroville Dam. State engineers inspect more than 12-hundred dams a year and high hazard dams get twice yearly checkups. 93 dams have been informed they have to have a spillway assessment, and work is reportedly planned by Sept. 1st for most of them.

There are several homeless sex offenders in California even after the state changed some rules to open up more housing options and found better tracking methods. Sex offenders have to register with the state and give their updated address to the state if they move. But the latest report shows the number of homeless offenders has more than tripled after new regulations, approved by voters that ban sex offenders from being in the proximity of schools and parks. As of last month, there were more than 6,300 homeless sex offenders registered in the state, down from 6,400 or so in January of 2015. The state is planning a new study thru San Jose State University to see why the number is still so high.

A mother from San Pablo has been arrested after being found sleeping behind the wheel of a car with her infant child inside, panting in the heat. The CHP found the woman on the northbound Highway 17 after a tow truck driver saw her with her 2-month-old daughter who they say was “panting” in the passenger seat next to the mom. It was more than 90 degrees outside at the time. The child was treated at the scene then taken to a hospital and reported in stable condition. Mom, 25 year old Adrianna Rolling, has been arrested for DUI, obstructing a peace officer in the performance of their duties and child endangerment.

A flight from Las Vegas to Oakland had to be delayed after a passenger got naked in front of all, then approached a flight attendant. It happened Saturday. The passenger picked up quickly by police and medical responders checked them out. They got treatment, and the flight went on its way. It was delayed about a half hour and arrived just 20 minutes later than it was supposed to.

The mayor of a town in southwestern France had to eat something pretty disgusting after a bet on a soccer match. Charles Dayot, the mayor of Mont-de-Marsan was really sure his team would beat Barcelona’s to get to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League competition so he joked he’d eat a rat if they lost. Welp… they were killed, 4 nothing, in the first game, then were eliminated after another two… He made good on his promise eating coypu stew. It’s made with a large rodent that apparently can be even bigger than a rat.
