A Lower Lake man wanted for allegedly trying to lure some girls into his car two years ago has been arrested in New York State. U.S. Marshals captured Koyi Daron Gillis in White Plains August 3. Lakeport Police suspected him of attempting to lure two girls, ages 8 and 11, in two incidents in October 2015. Police served a warrant at Gillis’ home that month and took his computer on which they allegedly found child pornography. The Lake County DA finished their investigation this summer and filed a complaint against Gillis in July for two felony counts of attempting to kidnap a child under age 14 and one count of possession of obscene matter depicting a person under age 18. Lakeport Police then asked the Marshals to help find him. Gillis was in jail in Westchester County, New York, awaiting extradition to Lake County.

Ukiah City Councilman Steve Scalmanini has filed an appeal of the site development permit for the much-delayed Airport Park Blvd Costco saying he thinks it should have solar panels. The Ukiah Daily Journal sites Scalmanini’s official appeal letter saying the lack of solar energy production for the project is “inconsistent with several goals and policies of the current City Council” and he says the omission of on-site energy production would “cause avoidable harm to the air quality of the state of California.” The appeal is scheduled for a special City Council hearing August 24.

“Wanton disregard for public safety” is how Ukiah Police have described the high-speed driving of a Ukiah man arrested Wednesday night. Just before midnight an officer saw three vehicles going north in the 700 block of South State Street, each doing about 80mph. The officer keyed in on the lead car and caught up to it on West Perkins Street. Driver Ryan Lopez of Ukiah was arrested for reckless driving but a records check revealed didn’t have a driver’s license and was on summary probation. A search turned up a meth pipe. Ukiah Police have not specified whether they were able to identify the drivers of the other two speeding cars.
