A fire that destroyed the Mendo Leaf Smoke Shop on North State Street this afternoon was apparently started when a vaping device exploded in an employee’s hand. The Ukiah Valley Fire Authority responded around Noon and Ukiah Police closed off State Street for several blocks. Division Chief Kevin Jennings tells the Ukiah Daily Journal when they got there, the office area in front was fully involved and while the fire did not spread to other buildings, they were evacuated due to the heavy smoke. Chief Jennings says there were also several explosions inside due to dozens of butane canisters, which were sold there. There is no current word on the condition of the employee who was burned.

There’s been a fatal shooting in Clearlake. Several people called 911 around 630pm Thursday night to report either hearing the shots or seeing a man down at the intersection of 2nd and Bush. Lake County Fire Protection District personnel responded but pronounced him dead a short time later. Clearlake Police are still piecing together information but they say the victim, a Hispanic man, had numerous gunshot wounds. They do know his name but have not released it publicly. As for a suspect, witnesses described seeing a newer-model, dark-colored Mercedes with a white top at the scene but no one had a look at the shooter.
