Some positive news today about one of the wildfires in the area. The U S Forest service says the Eel Fire east of Covelo has been 100% contained. The fire burned a little less than a thousand acres and now, all roads in the area east of Covelo are open while crews have started wrapping up their work. The fire started on July 31st. Even with containment, the forest service is still asking people there to be careful, as about 70 fire personnel remain on scene.

Fire crews are slowly making progress on the Mendocino Complex fire. It is now said to be 51 percent contained, while the Ranch fire is at is now at 48 percent percent containment and the River fire is 87 percent contained. Some people have been allowed to go back home in the Spring Valley, High Valley, Landrum Ranch and the Double Eagle Ranch east of Clearlake Oaks areas, however other previous mandatory evacuations remain in effect. There is a Red Flag advisory in effect into the weekend, with forecasts calling for more warm and windy weather.

School districts are coping with the fires with officials say student safety remains their first concern. Among the districts adjusting their start date,the Upper Lake Unified school board has decided to push back the opening bell by a week, so classes there are now set to start August 22nd. Crews have been busy making sure all school buildings and grounds are cleaned up by then.

California Senator Kamala Harris was in Lake County Thursday afternoon to speak with firefighters and area residents. She says she will do whatever she can to make sure the fire stays on the radar in Washington. She also says she has been impressed with the courage she’s seen by those dealing with the catastrophe.

Officials reaching out to the Spanish speaking community affected by the fires. The Lakeport Board of supervisors along with representatives of the Mexican Consulate and another groups held a forum – largely in Spanish – in Lakeport Thursday night. Lakeport resident Luisia Acosta came up with the idea following an earlier meeting to address concerns in her area.

A firefighter assigned to the the Carr fire Redding has died . Authorities say the man was killed in a traffic crash in Tehama County Another new blaze has also broken out not far from the front lines of the Carr fire.

In Southern California, a large wildfire near Los Angeles continues to grow. More evacuations have been ordered in the City of Lake Elsinore as crews report little progress there overnight and a state of emergency has been declared.

The smoke from the fires continues to cause concern. It’s effecting everything from air quality to visibility and has created spectacular orange sunsets across the state.

A three vehicle crash in Lakeville sends 8 people to the hospital Thursday night. Reports say some of those people–including children– suffered critical injuries. The crash closed part Lakeville Highway near Old Lakeville Road number 2 around 8:30. The victims were taken to three different hospitals. So far no word on what caused that near head on collision.

The Clearlake police department has busted an illegal marijuana growing operation. The Lake County News says the illegal growing was going on in the 15700 block of 37th Avenue and that officers seized dozens of plants along with 128 grams of meth and a .22 caliber rifle in the raid. The Clearlake PD says it will continue to look for suspected illegal growers and is asking anyone with information about those operations to contact law enforcement.

The monthly Mendocino County Homeless Services Continuum of Care public meeting is set for later this month in Ukiah. The meeting on August 20 at the Mendocino County Public Health department will feature a short presentation and vote on governance charter updates. The group meets to discuss ways to east the problem of homelessness in Mendocino County.

A mother and son have admitted running a prostitution ring in Santa Rosa and Rohnert park that prosecutors say operated for years. David Romesburg’s plea to money laundering, pimping and pandering could land him in jail for 16 years, while Fay Romesburg could get up to a year on felony charges of pandering.

California wont split up anytime soon. Billionaire Tim Draper says he is ending his effort to get a vote on his idea to make three states out of one. The California Supreme court rejected putting the plan on the ballot last month. Draper says that ruling put an end to his separation moment. He spent more than 7 million dollars of his own money on the failed proposal

Football season is here, even if it is just pre-season. The 49ers beat the Cowboys on Thursday night at Levi’s Stadium The games count starting on September 9th when the Niners play the Vikings in Minnesota.

A city in Vermont is trying a new way to get rid of Poison Ivy. They’re using GOATS to munch on the plants along some city paths in the state capital of Montpelier. The three goats,named Ruth, Bader, and Ginsberg, were put into service after city officials tried other more conventional methods that didn’t work. They say it will take a few years of grazing to get rid of the itch-causing plants problem altogether.
