Highway 101 had to be closed down after a fatal crash in the Garberville area. CHP in Garberville confirmed one death and two children with major injuries. The highway closed for a couple of hours yesterday north of Willits near Shimmins Ridge Road after a big rig and car got into an accident. There was one way controlled traffic around 4 p.m. on the northbound side only, the southbound side was closed. The accident happened before 2.

A budget workshop’s being held by the Clearlake City Council and then a reception for the city manager, Greg Folsom who’s leaving. The council’s workshop at 4 p.m. Thursday, then at 5 p.m., they’re having a reception for Folsom, whose going to be the city manager in Suisun City. His last day locally is March 30th. There will be a regular meeting of the council at 6, as usual. There will be a presentation for Folsom then too. They will also consider promoting the Assistant City Manager Alan Flora, to be the next city manager. Then the council will have a public review of the 2018 General Plan Housing Element Annual Progress Report.

The search continues for a woman from Covelo missing since last year. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office along with Mendocino Search and Rescue were looking for Khadijah Britton yesterday. They were draining a Round Valley Indian Tribe pond. Apparently in the same area where witnesses said they saw Britton. The Sheriff’s office is still accepting tips on the case and there’s an $85,000 reward for any information that leads to where the 23 year old may be. She vanished from Covelo in February, 2018 after being seen with her ex boyfriend who’s accused of forcing her into a car at gun point. Negie Fallis, is in prison on firearm charges. Police say they were searching the pond, because it’s close to where the woman was last seen, there were rumors she may have been put there and some police cadaver dogs were interested in the pond.

Flood debris being removed from the Russian River area. The cost of cleanup about $2.5 million dollars. Trash haulers came in to scrape the debris off the side of the road along Highway 116 and on residential streets from Forestville to Cazadero. A local emergency had been declared in the area calling the debris that came from 2,600 flooded homes and 570 businesses “a substantial present or potential hazard to human health and the environment.” Last week there were debris drop off sites where more than 1,100 tons of trash was taken. Then the curbside collection started, which was expected to pick up another 5,000 tons. There was slower traffic on Highway 116 as the collection was happening.

A teacher at a Cloverdale High School is out of a job, for now, for allowing a sort of fight club to happen in class, ending with multiple student injuries. Federico Vargas taken to jail for the incidents. He’s charged with suspicion of five counts of child endangerment and another 13 counts of contributing to the delinquency of minors. The school apparently called police saying Vargas’ classroom had a  ‘fight club’ style atmosphere”. Police say he let students fight each other in the classroom and even refereed the fights. They say there were several fights, one was filmed by a student. The school district superintendent says Vargas was a faculty member, not a substitute teacher. The website notes him as special ed faculty.

An advisory board in Mendocino County wants a report done on mental health in the county to be implemented. The Daily Journal reports the Mendocino County Behavioral Health Advisory Board released their yearly report with several recommendations sent to the Board of Supervisors to help the Behavioral Health Advisory Board. The Behavioral Health Board’s recommendations include creating a policy so employees of the county can work on boards as part of their job description, demand insurance parity for mental health, lobby state lawmakers to review part of the Mental Health Services Act, and implement all recommendations of the 2018 Kemper Report. They also want a Crisis Residential Treatment facility in Fort Bragg and more support and wellness efforts.

A new report says the state of Calif. barely had any racial profiling. But now some people say that’s not exactly so. The Racial and Identity Profiling Act report from 2017 shows barely any racial profiling by police in California, but now the board that oversees the reports is asking law enforcement agencies to encourage people to come forward. Some say the report seems more like police officers protecting each other and not addressing the actual problem. The reports from the board have been going on just a few years. This one is 83 pages long. The Sacramento President of the NAACP says the report is a joke, after it said out of 18 complaints, Sacramento police had no reports of racial profiling.

Thousands in damage at the UC Davis campus on a piece of farmland. The Putah Creek Riparian Reserve just outside the campus has been set on fire and been vandalized over several weeks. The asst. director of UC Davis arboretum & Public Garden says there’s been burning of picnic tables to destroying signs, burning them and most recently a lot of graffiti. An old Valley Oak Tree spray painted with a swastika. The school’s not sure who the culprit is either. They’re calling it a hate crime. New camera’s will be installed, so if it happens again in the future, the culprits will be caught.

Police say a woman in Lathrop, Calif. was not just trying on clothes at a big box store.  They say they found an empty six pack of beer at a Target dressing room. The beer taken in a shopping cart to the dressing room, where workers say the woman hung out for an hour. After she was done, cops say she left with as much as $200 in merchandise without paying. Elysia Johnson arrested and taken to the San Joaquin County Jail on suspicion of shoplifting and for three other warrants.

A crash in Mendocino County between a car and big rig ends in a man’s death and two children with major injuries. As we reported this morning the crash on the 101 with the CHP out of Garberville responding. They report 38 year old Patrick Herbstritt was killed in the crash Monday north of Willits. The two children were 2 and 5 year old boys who were flown to U.C. Davis Medical Center. No word if they’re related to the man who died. CHP reports Herbstritt lost control of his car and went into the northbound lanes, hit a guardrail and crashed into the Freightliner rig which was towing an empty flatbed trailer at the time. The driver of the big rig and his two passengers were uninjured.

The Ethiopian Airliner crash took the lives of eight Americans, among them, two brothers from Redding who were traveling the world together. Melvin and Bennett Riffel vacationing first in Australia and Somalia and were headed to Ethiopia with the 155 others who died in the crash Sunday. A family friend says Melvin’s wife was also on vacation with the brothers but came back to the states after their visit to Australia. The two brothers are Redding natives and graduated from Shasta High and were the only children of their parents. There’s a go fund me page set up for Melvin’s wife for expenses related to the accident.

Stolen items have been found by the California Highway Patrol’s Clear Lake Area office after a drug related arrest. A woman from Santa Rosa in a van hanging around an area in Upper Lake where there had been multiple thefts. Community members in Upper Lake started a patrol group due to the recent thefts, seeing suspicious vehicles and other issues. They saw the suspicious white van and another blue van loitering and told police. They found the white van, but nobody was inside, and found it was recently stolen. They also found a bunch of stolen property inside it which has been returned to its owners. The blue van had a sleeping woman inside, Harley Wilson. Cops say she had drugs on her so she was arrested with bail set at $20,000. She’s due in court tomorrow.
