California Highway Patrol say they recovered a stolen vehicle from Fort Bragg Tuesday in Harris a rural area in Southeast Humboldt County. State troopers arrested John Hill, who was still driving the stolen 2010 Dodge Challenger.

This flu season is already setting a tragic record in the Northeast for children. According to the CDC, 27 kids in the US have died this flu season, that is the highest number of pediatric influenza deaths since the CDC started keeping records over 17 years ago. The flu got a later start in California, but it has jumped from low to moderate levels within a two weeks period. Last season California never reached the high level, it instead peaked in mid-February at moderate level. Doctors in the Northeast say they are seeing unusually high numbers of confirmed cases for this time of the year. Health officials say the best way to prevent contracting the flu is getting the vaccine. Even if you do happen to come down with the flu, the shot lessens the severity.

The University of San Francisco police identified the man suspected of kidnapping a Fort Bragg teen who faces eighteen felonies and one misdemeanor. 21-year-old King John Baylon is behind bars and faces who faces charges of kidnapping, human trafficking involving a minor, and lewd acts with a child. Both he and the girl were found in San Francisco over the weekend by law enforcement. Officials still haven’t said how he and the girl met up or where they had been hiding out. He will be arraigned later this week.

Arcata Recreation will soon be hosting a free Infant Massage Course through Arcata Play Center. The 5-week course meets once a week and will cover topics ranging from the benefits of touch, infant development, bonding and attachment, and infant-parent communication. The class will meet on Mondays starting January 13th through February 10th from 1 pm until 2:30 pm at the D Street Neighborhood Center. This is a free course, but you must pre-register through the Arcata Play Center.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and the EOD team had to investigate a suspicious package found near a stop sign Tuesday in McKinleyville. Central between Airport and Grange were closed as the bomb squad checked to see if the package was in fact explosive. Shortly before 4pm the Sheriff’s Office tweeted. ‘scene clear. No explosive items located.

Newly appointed Mendocino County Sheriff Matt Kendall took the reins last month after Sherriff Tom Allman retired. Kendall has spent 30 years working for the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office. He was first hired back in 1990 to work at the county jail. He worked his way up the ranks from deputy sheriff, to inspections director and patrol sergeant and undersheriff. Sheriff Kendall will be focusing on the opioid epidemic, mail theft that results in identity theft and cannabis enforcement.

The Lakeport City Council approved updates to their utilities billing administrative policy at Tuesday’s meeting. The changes were made t better serve the customers of the city’s water, sewer and garbage services. Officials said that the policy was first adopted back in 2004 and was last updated in 2017 and due to the passing of Senate Bill 998 which goes into effect in February, the policy had to be updated. SB 998 requires the city to adopt a policy to service discontinuances, provide specific notice to delinquent customers, take certain steps before terminating water service and offer customers an alternative payment plan before discounting service for nonpayment. In addition, there is now a limit on the amount the city can charge for reconnection fees and it also waives interest payments once a year for certain customers. City officials say that the new legislation changes their ability to shut water off from 30 days to 60 days. Overall SB 988 was created to show transparency and to protect low-income households who cannot afford payments.
