MAN KILLED BY TOW TRUCK IDENTIFIED JKB 5/31/12

  • A MAN WHO DIED AFTER BEING HIT BY A TOW TRUCK ON HIGHWAY 53 IN CLEARLAKE HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS 46 YEAR OLD RICARDO BAUTISTA PEREZ OF NICE.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, PEREZ WAS STANDING NEXT TO HIS PARKED PICK UP TRUCK ON THE NORTHBOUND SHOULDER OF THE ROADWAY WHEN A FLAT BED TOW TRUCK LOADED WITH TWO VEHICLES, BEING DRIVEN BY 45 YEAR OLD JOSEPH BROWN OF YUBA CITY, SWERVED TO AVOID A CAR THAT WAS STOPPED WAITING TO MAKE A LEFT HAND TURN ONTO POLK AVENUE AT 2:34 PM. THE TRUCK CLIPPED THE BACK END OF THE STOPPED VEHICLE AND CONTINUED ON, STRIKING PEREZ AND THE REAR OF HIS PICK UP. PEREZ DIED AFTER BEING AIRLIFTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL.

POLICE CANT IDENTIFY BODY JKB 5/31/12

  • POLICE IN PLEASANTON SAY THEY CANNOT POSITIVELY IDENTIFY THE BODY OF A WOMAN THAT WAS FOUND IN A TRASH CAN NEAR AN UPSCALE NEIGHBORHOOD LAST WEEK, BUT SAY THEY ARE CONFIDENT IT IS NOT THE BODY OF MISSING 15 YEAR OLD SIERRA LAMAR.

A MAN FOUND THE WOMANS BODY ON THURSDAY. INVESTIGATORS SAY A PRELIMINARY AUTOPSY WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE VICTIMS AGE, ETHNICITY OR IDENTITY, AND THAT FINGERPRINTS COULD NOT IMMEDIATELY BE TRACED THROUGH THE CALIFORNIA DMV. AUTHORITIES SAY THEY DO NOT BELIEVE THE BODY IS THAT OF LAMAR WHO DISAPPEARED MARCH 16TH WHILE ON HER WAY TO SCHOOL. A SUSPECT HAS BEEN ARRESTED IN THAT CASE.

NO TIMETABLE FOR AUTOPSY RESULTS JKB 5/31/12

  • THE LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE HAS REPORTED THAT THEY HAVE NO TIMETABLE FOR THE RELEASE OF AUTOPSY RESULTS FOR A COBB WOMAN THAT WAS KILLED, AND A MAN WHO DIED IN CUSTODY AFTER BEING CHARGED WITH HER DEATH EARLIER THIS MONTH.

33 YEAR OLD BETHANY VOGEL WAS FOUND DEAD IN HER HOME ON MAY 4TH, THE VICTIM OF AN APPARENT HOMICIDE. VOGELS BOYFRIEND, 44 YEAR OLD JAMES CARPY WAS ARRESTED AT THE SCENE AND CHARGED WITH MURDER. HE WAS FOUND DEAD IN HIS JAIL CELL TWO DAYS LATER. AUTOPSIES FOR BOTH WERE PERFORMED ON MAY 8TH, BUT NO DETAILS ARE BEING RELEASED UNTIL THE RESULTS OF TOXICOLOGY TESTS ARE RECEIVED FROM THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE. AUTHORITIES SAY THAT COULD TAKE SEVERAL MORE WEEKS.

BURGLARY ARREST JKB 5/31/12

  • A LAYTONVILLE MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER HE WAS CAUGHT IN THE ACT OF BURGLARIZING A VACANT TRAILER ON MONDAY.

DEPUTIES WERE CALLED A LOCATION ON THE LAYTONVILLE RESERVATION AT AROUND 5 PM ON A REPORT OF A BURGLARY IN PROGRESS. 47 YEAR OLD MERVIN WILSON WAS REPORTEDLY SEEN CRAWLING THROUGH A STORAGE COMPARTMENT IN ORDER TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE TRAILER. WILSON WAS JUST EXITING THE TRAILER WHEN DEPUTIES AND TRIBAL POLICE ARRIVED ON THE SCENE. HE WAS FOUND IN POSSESSION OF METHAMPHETAMINE AND ARRESTED.

BILL MCVEY DIES JKB 5/31/12

  • LONGTIME LAKEPORT RESIDENT AND OWNER OF LAKEPORT FORD, FORMERLY AIRPORT AUTO BROKERS BILL MCVEY, PASSED AWAY AT THE QUEEN OF THE VALLEY HOSPITAL IN NAPA TUESDAY EVENING. HE WAS 79.

MCVEY WAS WELL KNOWN FOR HIS COMMUNITY SERVICE, PASSION FOR CARS AND RACING, AND HIS SUPPORT OF LAKEPORT SPEEDWAY, AS WELL AS MANY OTHER COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS. IN CELEBRATION OF HIS LIFE, LAKEPORT FORD AND THE MCVEY FAMILY INVITE ALL TO A MEMORIAL HONORING MCVEYS LIFE AND CONTRIBUTIONS DURING THEIR OFFICIAL RIBBON CUTTING ON FRIDAY, JUNE 1ST AT 5:30 PM.

TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO CONCEALED WEAPONS CHARGE

TRIBAL POLICE ON THE COYOTE VALLEY RANCHERIA PULLED OVER 25 YEAR OLD LUIS JOHN OLIVER AROUND 3:30 YESTERDAY MORNING. DURING THE STOP, OFFICERS LEARNED OLIVER WAS ON PAROLE AND IN POSSESSION OF AMMUNITION. A FURTHER SEARCH REVEALED OLIVER HAD A PISTOL CONCEALED ON HIM, AND THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE WAS REQUESTED TO RESPOND. OLIVER WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY WITHOUT INCIDENT.

MEASURE D JH 05/31/2012

MEASURE D ELIMINATES THE ELECTED TREASURER

IN NEXT TUESDAYS ELECTION, UKIAH RESIDENTS WILL BE ASKED TO APPROVE MEASURE D WHICH ELIMINATES THE TREASURER POSITION AND SHIFTS THOSE RESPONSIBILITIES TO THE FINANCIAL DIRECTOR. THIS CHANGE WILL SAVE THE CITY $10K A YEAR. HOWEVER, CITY OFFICIALS ESTIMATE THAT THE COST OF PUTTING THE MEASURE ON THE BALLOT WILL BE BETWEEN $10,000 AND $25,000, SO THE CITY WONT SEE ANY SAVINGS FOR 1 TO 2 YEARS.

  • A COVELO MAN WHO CALLED LAW ENFORCEMENT ABOUT A SUSPECTED MARIJUANA GROWING OPERATION, WAS ARRESTED AFTER HE ALLEGEDLY TRY TO RUN DOWN TWO MEN ON ETSEL RIDGE FRIDAY AFTERNOON.

66 YEAR OLD JERRY TERGIS CALLED A STATE FISH AND GAME WARDEN TO REPORT A LARGE SCALE MARIJUANA GROWING OPERATION IN THE AREA THAT WAS CAUSING ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE AND DIVERTING WATER. AS HE WAS LEADING THE WARDEN TO THE AREA IN HIS VEHICLE, TERGIS DELIBERATELY ACCELERATED AND DROVE DIRECTLY THROUGH A CLOSED LIVE STOCK GATE, JUST MISSING TWO 36 YEAR OLD MEN STANDING ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE GATE WITH HIS CAR. BOTH MEN NARROWLY ESCAPED FROM BEING HIT. NEITHER MAN WAS INJURED. TEGRIS WAS DETAINED BY THE GAME WARDEN UNTIL SHERIFFS DEPUTIES ARRIVED AND BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL FOR ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON.

STABBING ARREST JKB 5/30/12

  • ONE MAN WAS JAILED AND ANOTHER AIRLIFTED TO A HOSPITAL AFTER AN ALTERCATION AT DICKS PLACE BAR IN MENDOCINO EARLY MONDAY MORNING.

ACCORDING TO POLICE 28 YEAR OLD RILEY KIESEL THREATENED 32 YEAR OLD DICKS PLACE EMPLOYEE ALEXANDER BEHOUNEK WITH A KNIFE AFTER KIESEL WAS EIGHTY-SIXED FROM BAR AT AROUND 1:30 AM. LATER THAT MORNING KIESEL JUMPED IN FRONT OF BEHOUNEKS CAR AT THE INTERSECTION OF LITTLE LAKE ROAD AND LANSING STREET AS HE DROVE HOME AT AROUND 3:20 AM. BEHOUNEK GOT OUT OF THE CAR TO CONFRONT KIESEL AND WAS STABBED ONCE IN THE ABDOMEN. KIESEL THEN FLED THE SCENE ON FOOT. THE VICTIM WAS AIRLIFTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. NO WORD YET ON HIS CONDITION. KIESEL WAS LOCATED A SHORT WHILE LATER AND ADMITTED TO THE ASSAULT. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL FOR ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE AND ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON.

KRUSE SENTENCE JKB 5/30/12

  • 68 YEAR OLD FORMER ALBION WATER SKI COACH RICK KRUSE WAS SENTENCED TO THE MAXIMUM TERM YESTERDAY, FOR THE MOLESTATION OF ONE OF HIS FORMER TEAM MEMBERS.

KRUSE WAS CONVICTED OF THE ONGOING SEXUAL MOLESTATION OF MINOR BEGINNING WHEN SHE WAS JUST 7 YEARS OLD. DURING THE TRIAL, A FORMER NEIGHBOR TESTIFIED THAT SHE TOO HAD BEEN MOLSETED BY KRUSE AT ABOUT THE SAME AGE MORE THAN 30 YEARS AGO. KRUSE IS SUSPECTED IN OTHER MOLESTATION CASES AS WELL. JUDGE ANNE MOORMAN GAVE HIM THE MAXIMUM SENTENCE OF 10 YEARS IN STATE PRISON, WITH 647 DAYS CREDIT FOR TIME SERVED.

FIRE ON COW MOUNTAIN JKB 5/30/12

  • THE SMOKE YOU MAY HAVE SEEN ON COW MOUNTAIN MONDAY WAS DUE TO A SMALL WILDFIRE THAT BROKE OUT NEAR THE U WANNA CAMP CAMPGROUND EAST OF LAKEPORT.

THE BLAZE BEGAN JUST AFTER 3 PM ON PINE RIDGE ROAD NEAR SCOTTS CREEK ROAD AND BLACKENED APPROXIMATELY A HALF ACRE. ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS, A WOMAN BURNING TRASH ON HER PROPERTY SPARKED THE FIRE. IT WAS CONTAINED IN ABOUT 45 MINUTES.

  • THREE SMALL SPOT FIRES THAT OCCURRED BETWEEN THE LAKE / MENDOCINO COUNTY LINE AND BLUE LAKES YESTERDAY WERE STARTED BY A CAR THAT WAS BEING TOWED ALONG HIGHWAY 20.

THE FIRES WERE REPORTED AT AROUND 2:30 PM. ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS, A WHEEL FELL OFF THE CAR BEING TOWED AND SPARKED THE FIRES. ONE OF THE FIRES NEAR THE LODGE A BLUE LAKES WAS EXTINGUISHED BY SEVERAL LOCAL PEOPLE BEFORE FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, 69 EYAR OLD VOLDEMARS REDINS WAS RIDING SOUTHBOUND IN THE SLOWLANE AT APPROXIMATELY 55 MILES AN HOUR WHEN HE WAS HIT FROM BEHIND BY 37 YEAR OLD JOHN CALDWELL OF WILLITS AT AROUND 7 PM. INVESTIGATORS ESTIMATED CALDWELL WAS TRAVELING 60 TO 65 MILES AN HOUR. REDINS WAS EJECTED ONTO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROADWAY. HE WAS AIRLIFTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WITH ONLY MINOR INJURIES. CHP INVESTIGATORS SAY REDINS PROPER USED OF A SAFETY HELMET AND LEATHER JACKET GREATLY REDUCED HIS INJURIES. CALDWELL WAS NOT ARRESTED.

  • AN OAKLAND MAN WAS LUCKY TO ESCAPE WITH ONLY MINOR INJURIES WHEN HIS PICK UP ROLLED OVER SEVERAL TIMES NEAR TWIN LAKES FRIDAY MORNING.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, 38 YEAR OLD RAFAEL GOMEZ WAS TRAVELING NORTHBOUND IN HIGHWAY 29 NORTH OF C STREET IN LOWER LAKE WHEN HE FELL ASLEEP AT AROUND 6:30 AM. HIS TRUCK DRIFTED ONTO THE SHOULDER AND COLLIDED WITH A GUARDRAIL AND OVERTURNED SEVERAL TIMES. INVESTIGATORS SAY THE PROPER USE OF SEATBELT LESSONED HIS INJURIES. HE WAS TAKEN TO ST. HELENA HOSPITAL IN CLEARLAKE, TREATED AND RELEASED.

  • FOUR PEOPLE WERE ABLE TO ESCAPE UNHARMED WHEN A FIRE DESTROYED THEIR MOBIL HOME AND SPARKED A VEGETATION FIRE IN CLEARLAKE THURSDAY NIGHT.

FAMILY MEMBERS REPORTED BEING AWAKENED BY SMOKE AND THE SOUND OF A FIRE SHORTLY AFTER 11 PM. ALL MADE IT SAFELY OUT OF THE HOUSE AND FIREFIGHTERS WERE CALLED. THE BLAZE REPORTEDLY STARTED NEAR A BACK BEDROOM, COMPLETELY DESTROYED THE MOBILE HOME AND BLACKENED APPROXIMATELY TWO ACRES OF SURROUNDING AREA. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

  • A HOUSE FIRE IN NORTHERN MENDOCINO COUNTY KEPT FIREFIGHTERS OUT ALL NIGHT THURSDAY AND EARLY FRIDAY MORNING.

THE BLAZE APPEARED TO HAVE STARTED IN A WOOD STOVE CHIMNEY, WHERE IT PASSED THROUGH THE ATTIC OF AN A-FRAME STRUCTURE ON HIGHWAY 1 IN HALES GROVE, ABOUT MIDWAY BETWEEN LEGGET AND THE MENDOCINO COAST. ACCORDING TO CAL FIRE, THE FIRE MIGHT HAVE BEEN PREVENTED BY SIMPLY CLEANING THE CHIMNEY.

  • FIVE PEOPLE WERE INJURED IN A TWO VEHICLE COLLISION ON HIGHWAY 20 NEAR THE CACHE CREEK RECREATION AREA YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, 25 YEAR OLD ANDREW BARKET OF HARRISBURG PENN. WAS TRAVELING EASTBOUND WHEN HE SWERVED TO AVOID A CAR BEING DRIVEN BY 50 YEAR OLD WILLIAM WARWICK III THAT HAD STOPPED TO MAKE A LEFT HAND TURN AT AROUND 1 PM. BARKET DROVE ONTO THE RIGHT SHOULDER AND THEN LOST CONTROL AS HE RE-ENTERED THE ROADWAY. HE CROSSED THE CENTERLINE AND COLLIDED HEAD ON WITH AN SUV DRIVEN BY 34 YEAR OLD DOUGLAS HUME OF CITRUS HEIGHTS. BARKET, HUME, AND TWO PASSENGERS IN HUMES VEHICLE SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES AND WERE TAKEN TO VARIOUS HOSPITALS FOR TREATMENT. A PASSENGER IN BARKETS VEHICLE, 21 YEAR OLD DAVID DUFF OF DAUPHIN PENN. SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES. HE WAS AIRLIFTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL.

  • TWO BAY AREA MEN WITH PREVIOUS CONVICTIONS FOR ABALONE POACHING ON THE NORTH COAST HAVE BEEN ARRESTED AGAIN ON SIMILAR CHARGES.

61 YEAR OLD PAUL CHAK PO MAK AND 41 YEAR OLD XING SIN, BOTH OF OAKLAND, HAVE BEEN CHARGED WITH POACHING A TOTAL OF 84 ABALONE FOR COMMERCIAL PURPOSES. FORREST RANGER STATION DEMOLISHED JKB 5/29/12

  • A 75 YEAR OLD RANGER STATION ON THE MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST WAS DEMOLISHED ON FRIDAY TO MAKE WAY FOR A NEW RANGER STATION.

THE BUILDING LOCATED IN THE UPPER LAKE RANGER DISTRICT WAS BUILT IN 1938 AND WAS ORIGINALLY A RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURE BEFORE BEING CONVERTED INTO AN OFFICE. IT WAS THE SECOND BUILDING DEMOLISHED IN THE PAST MONTH TO MAKE ROOM FOR THE NEW RANGER STATION. TWO MORE STRUCTURES ARE SCHEDULED TO BE REMOVED, INCLUDING A GARAGE CONSTRUCTED IN 1938 AND A MAIN OFFICE BUILD IN 1967. THE NEW 10,000 SQUARE FOOT RANGER STATION WILL HOUSE AN ESTIMATED 68 EMPLOYEES AFTER ITS COMPLETION.

BATTERY ARREST JKB 5/25/12

  • A UKIAH MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER GETTING INTO AN ALTERCATION WITH TRIBAL POLICE OFFICERS WEDNESDAY EVENING.

SHERIFFS DEPUTIES WERE CALLED TO THE SCENE ON COYOTE VALLEY BLVD IN REDWOOD VALLEY AT AROUND 7 PM AFTER 27 YEAR OLD RICHARD ORTIZ BECAME COMBATIVE WHILE BEING PLACED UNDER ARREST FOR PUBLIC INTOXICATION. ONE OF THE TRIBAL OFFICERS SUFFERED A KNEE INJURY . ORTIZ WAS EVENTUALLY RESTRAINED AND PLACED INTO ONE OF THE TRIBAL OFFICERS POLICE CARS. HE KICKED OUT THE SIDE WINDOW OF THE PATROL CAR JUST AS DEPUTIES ARRIVED AND WAS PLACED INTO A RESTRAINT DEVICE. DURING THAT OPERATION ORTIZ SUFFERED A LACERATION TO HIS FOREHEAD. BOTH HE AND THE INJURED TRIBAL OFFICER WERE TAKEN TO THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER FOR TREATMENT. ORTIZ WAS LATER BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL.

ACCORDING TO THE LAKE COUNTY NEWS, 67 YEAR OLD JOAN MOSS OF COBB, TOOK A SWING AT 46 YEAR OLD MANDY FEDER DURING A BEHIND-CLOSED DOORS MEETING AT THE RECORD BEE OFFICES. FEDER REPORTED THAT THE PUNCH MISSED HER AND SHE NOTIFIED THE LAKEPORT POLICE DEPARTMENT, BUT DECLINED TO FILE CHARGES OR HAVE A REPORT TAKEN.   • AN EMERYVILLE MAN IN A WHEELCHAIR DROWNED AFTER FALLING INTO THE WATER AT THE EMERYVILLE MARINA TUESDAY EVENING.

ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, 62 YEAR OLD WILLIAM FERRIS WAS STRUGGLING WITH HIS WHEELCHAIR JUST PRIOR TO DISAPPEARING IN THE WATER AT AROUND 6 PM.   • A ROUTINE TRAFFIC STOP IN UKIAH LED TO THE ARREST OF A WILLITS WOMAN AND THE DISCOVERY OF A MARIJUANA GROWING OPERATION IN HER HOME TUESDAY.

48 YEAR OLD JACKI LYN SCOTT WAS FOUND TO BE DRIVING ON A SUSPENDED LICENSE. A SEARCH OF HER CAR AND PERSON TURNED UP A SMALL AMOUNT OF METHAMPHETAMINE IN HER WALLET, TWO OUNCES OF COCAINE, AND TWO OUNCES OF METHAMPHETAMINE IN HER CAR. THAT LED TO A SEARCH OF HER HOME IN WILLITS WHERE POLICE FOUND 103 GROWING MARIJUANA PLANTS, ADDITIONAL COCAINE, SCALES, PACKAGING MATERIAL AND OTHER EVIDENCE OF DRUG SALES. SHE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL ON A NUMBER OF CHARGES.

POSSIBLE MURDER CHARGE IN ACCIDENT JKB 5/24/12

  • HUMBOLDT COUNTY PROSECUTORS SAY IT IS POSSIBLE THEY COULD CHARGE A FORMER SHERIFFS DEPUTY WITH MURDER IN THE DEATH OF FORMER EUREKA WOMAN WHO DIED IN A MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT IN FEBRUARY.

30 YEAR OLD CARA BANDUCCI WAS A PASSENGER ON THE BACK OF 41 YEAR OLD MICHAEL CAMPBELLS MOTORCYCLE WHEN IT CRASHED ON WATERFRONT DRIVE FEBRUARY 29TH. BANDUCCI SUFFERED FATAL INJURIES AND DIED AFTER BEING AIRLIFTED TO A HOSPITAL OUT OF THE AREA. CAMPBELL WAS FOUND TO BE DRIVING WHILE INTOXICATED. FORENSIC ACCIDENT EXPERTS ARE TRYING TO DETERMINE THE SPEED AT WHICH CAMPBELL WAS DRIVING AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT. ACCORDING TO THE CHP, YOUNGER WAS DRIVING EASTBOUND ON SIMPSON LANE IN FORT BRAGG WHEN HE COLLIDED WITH A PG&E POWER POLE JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT TUESDAY MORNING. THE POWER POLE LANDED ON TOP OF THE CAR WITH THE DOWNED POWER LINES NEXT TO THE VEHICLE. YOUNGER IS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN ELECTROCUTED AS HE STEPPED OUT OF HIS CAR AND DIED AT THE SCENE. THE CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING THE COLLISION ARE STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION. AN AUTOPSY TO DETERMINE HIS EXACT CAUSE OF DEATH HAS BEEN SCHEDULED FOR TODAY.

  • A UKIAH MAN HAS BEEN ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH A HATE CRIME AFTER ALLEGEDLY BEATING A MAN HE THOUGHT WAS GAY.

ACCORDING TO POLICE, 22 YEAR OLD EDWARD TWO-FEATHERS STEELE WAS REPORTEDLY INTOXICATED WHEN HE YELLED DEROGATORY COMMENTS AT THE VICTIM WHO WAS TAKING A WALK IN SOUTH UKIAH ON SATURDAY. HE THEN APPROACHED THE MAN AND REPEATEDLY PUNCHED HIM IN THE FACE. STEELE RAN INTO A HOME ON MULBERRY STREET AS POLICE ARRIVED. HE WAS FOUND HIDING IN A BATHTUB. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL FOR COMMITTING A HATE CRIME, BATTERY, AND VIOLATION OF PAROLE.

WOMAN DETAINED AFTER SETTING FIRE AT POST OFFICE JKB 5/23/12

  • A WOMAN WAS DETAINED MONDAY AFTER SHE ALLEGEDLY CONFESSED TO SETTING A FIRE INSIDE THE ARCATA POST OFFICE LOBBY AND ATTEMPTING TO SET FIRE TO A VEHICLE.

THE FIRE AT THE POST OFFICE WAS REPORTED AT 4:15 SUNDAY AFTERNOON. AUTHORITIES SAID PAPER AND DEBRIS HAD BEEN SET ON FIRE IN THE LOBBY. A PASSERBY PUT OUT THE BLAZE WITH A FIRE EXTINGUISHER FROM HIS CAR. THE POST OFFICE SUSTAINED MINOR DAMAGE. THE NEXT DAY POLICE RECEIVED A REPORT OF A PERSON ATTEMPTED TO PUT A LIT CIGARETTE IN THE FUEL TANK OF A CAR PARKED ON 10TH STREET. THE SUSPECT WAS GONE BY THE TIME POLICE ARRIVED, BUT HER DESCRIPTION MATCHED THAT OF A PERSON SEEN HANGING AROUND THE POST OFFICE FIRE AT THE TIME OF THE SUNDAY FIRE. POLICE LATER IDENTIFIED A SUSPECT AND SHE CONFESSED TO BOTH INCIDENTS. SHE WAS DETAINED FOR A MENTAL HEALTH EVALUATION AND TRANSPORTED TO A PSYCHIATRIC FACILITY IN EUREKA. HER NAME HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED.

21 YEAR OLD ANTOLIN GARCIA-TORRES WAS ARRESTED MONDAY, MORE THAN TWO MONTHS AFTER LAMAR DISAPPEARED. INVESTIGATORS SAY HIS DNA WAS FOUND IN LAMARS HANDBAG, AND HER DNA WAS FOUND INSIDE HIS CAR. THE TWO REPORTEDLY DID NOT KNOW EACH OTHER. GARCIA-TORRES DNA HAD BEEN COLLECTED DURING A PREVIOUS ASSAULT ARREST. AUTHORITIES BELIEVE LAMAR WAS KIDNAPPED WHILE WALKING TO A SCHOOL BUS STOP IN MORGAN HILL MARCH 16TH. LAMARS BODY HAS NOT BEEN FOUND.

ANTON STADIUM RECEIVES $40,000 DONATION JKB 5/23/12

  • THE BELTRAMI FAMILY OF UKIAH HAS MADE A $40,000 DONATION TO THE RENOVATION OF ANTON STADIUM.

THE MONEY WILL BE A HUGE HELP AS THE PROJECT MOVES INTO THE FINAL PHASE OF CONSTRUCTION. AB1589, CALLED THE CALIFORNIA STATE PARKS STEWARDSHIP ACT OF 2012 IS DESIGNED TO MAKE STATE PARKS MORE SELF-SUFFICIENT AND WELL-FUNDED BY INCREASING USE FEES, THE COLLECTION OF UNPAID USER FEES, AND THE CREATION OF A FUND TO ENSURE LONG-TERM MANAGEMENT AND SUSTAINABLE FUNDING OPTIONS FOR STATE PARKS. THE BILL RECEIVED UNANIMOUS SUPPORT IN BOTH ASSEMBLY POLICY COMMITTEES THAT DID THE REVIEW. THE LEGISLATION WAS UNVEILED AT A NEWS CONFERENCE YESTERDAY.

MAN ELECTROCUTED AFTER ACCIDENT JKB 5/22/12

  • A FORT BRAGG MAN WAS ELECTROCUTED AFTER COLLIDING WITH A POWER POLE ON SIMPSON LANE EARLY SUNDAY MORNING.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, THE VICTIM, WHOSE NAME HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED, WAS TRAVELING EASTBOUND ON SIMPSON LANE JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT MONDAY WHEN HE LEFT THE ROADWAY AND COLLIDED WITH THE POWER POLE JUST EAST OF FRANKLIN ROAD. THE COLLISION CAUSED THE POWER POLE TO COLLAPSE ONTO THE VEHICLE, LEAVING THE POWER LINES EXPOSED ON THE ROADWAY. THE VICTIM WAS KILLED WHEN HE MADE CONTACT WITH THE POWER LINES AS HE EXITED THE VEHICLE. THE INVESTIGATION IS CONTINUING.

STABBING ARREST JKB 5/22/12

  • A LAKEPORT WOMAN WAS ARRESTED FOR STABBING HER BOYFRIEND DURING A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE DISPUTE LATE LAST WEEK.

AUTHORITIES LEARNED OF THE INCIDENT WHEN THE 42 YEAR OLD VICTIM SHOWED UP AT SUTTER LAKESIDE HOSPITAL WITH MULTIPLE STAB WOUNDS TO HIS LEFT HAND AND RIGHT THIGH. HE TOLD POLICE THAT AN UNKNOWN HISPANIC MAN HAD ASSAULTED HIM ON THE NORTH SIDE OF LIBRARY PARK. AN INVESTIGATION FOUND NO EVIDENCE OF A STABBING AT THE PARK. FURTHER INVESTIGATION IDENTIFIED A LOCATION ON 15TH STREET WHERE THE ASSAULT OCCURRED AND THE VICTIMS GIRLFRIEND, 26 YEAR OLD KRISSANDRA BURROWS AS A POSSIBLE SUSPECT. BURROWS WAS ARRESTED FOR ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON WITH GREAT BODILY INJURY AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND BOOKED INTO THE LAKE COUNTY JAIL.

BBQ STARTS HOUSE FIRE JKB 5/22/12

  • AN OVERTURNED BAR BE QUE WAS THE CAUSE OF A FIRE THAT DAMAGED A CLEARLAKE OAKS HOME EARLY SATURDAY MORNING.

THE BLAZE WAS REPORTED JUST AFTER 2:30 AM. THE FIRE STARTED ON THE REAR PORCH AREA OF THE DOUBLEWIDE MOBILE HOME AND DAMAGED AN AREA BENEATH THE HOME, PART OF THE ATTIC AREA AND THE LAUNDRY ROOM. DAMAGE WAS ESTIMATED AT $40,000. THERE WERE NO REPORTED INJURIES.

  • STATE HEALTH OFFICIALS ARE WARNING THE PUBLIC NOT TO EAT CERTAIN BAGGED SALADS MANUFACTURED BY RIVER RANCH FRESH FOODS LLC BECAUSE THEY MAY BE CONTAMINATED WITH LISTERIA.

NO ILLNESSES HAVE BEEN REPORTED SO FAR. THE VOLUNTARY RECALL WAS ISSUED AFTER ROUTINE SAMPLING DETECTED LISTERIA IN TWO PACKAGES OF SHREDDED ICEBERG LETTUCE PURCHASED FROM RETAIL LOCATIONS IN CALIFORNIA AND COLORADO. A THOROUGH SEARCH TURNED UP ON ANIMALS OF ANY KIND OTHER THAN A LARGE STUFFED CARTOON CHARACTER ANIMAL. INVESTIGATORS ARE NOW FOLLOWING UP ON THE MOTIVE BEHIND THE ALLEGATIONS THAT WERE MADE.

60 YEAR OLD HELEN BELLONI WAS DRIVING 18 STUDENTS TO AMBROSINI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SHORTLY AFTER 7:30 AM APRIL 17TH WHEN SHE STRUCK 84 YEAR OLD AUDRY MCROBERTS IN A CROSSWALK AS SHE MADE A LEFT TURN. MCROBERTS DIED AT THE SCENE. NO ONE ON THE BUS WAS INJURED. THE ACCIDENT WAS SEEN BY SEVERAL WITNESSES. THE HUMBOLDT COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE HAS STATED THAT BELLONIS CONDUCT WAS NOT CRIMINAL AND NO CHARGES WOULD BE FILED. BELLONI HAS BEEN ON PAID ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE SINCE THE ACCIDENT.

Gov Brown Signs Casino Compact

Gov. Jerry Brown on Thursday signed AB 517, the bill that ratifies his gambling agreement with the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria. The agreement, called a compact, allows the tribe to start work on a 3,000-slot machine casino outside Rohnert Park. The compact now faces one final governmental hurdle at the federal Department of the Interior, which has 45 days to approve or reject it. This week, Station Casinos, the Las Vegas company bankrolling the project, said the casino would open to gamblers by the end of 2013.
