  • THE HUMBOLDT COUNTY CORONERS OFFICE HAS IDENTIFIED THE BODY OF A MAN FOUND DEAD YESTERDAY IN THE TRINITY RIVER AS THAT OF A HUMBOLDT STATE UNIVERSITY FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT WHO WAS SWEPT AWAY IN THE RIVER MORE THAN A WEEK AGO.

21 YEAR OLD JIAN KANG WAS WADING IN THE RIVER AT THE TISH TANG CREEK CAMPGROUND WHEN HE LOST HIS BALANCE AND WAS SWEPT DOWNSTREAM JUNE 19TH. A MEMBER OF THE HOOPA TRIBE VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT FOUND KANGS BODY ABOUT 6 MILES DOWNSTREAM FROM WHERE HE DISAPPEARED.

SCOOTER ACCIDENT INJURED MAN JKB 6/30/11

  • A WILLITS MAN RIDING A PERSONAL MOBILITY SCOOTER WAS SEVERELY INJURED WHEN HE WAS DRAGGED UNDER THE WHEELS OF A BIG RIG LAST WEEK.

54 YEAR OLD NEIL WRIGHT WAS RIDING ON THE SIDEWALK JUST NORTH OF THE BAECHTEL CREEK MEDICAL CLINIC WHEN, ACCORDING TO WITNESSES, HIS SCOOTER WHEELS GOT TOO CLOSE TO THE EDGE AND HE TILTED ONTO THE WHEELS OF A TANKER TRUCK THAT HAD SLOWED DUE TO TRAFFIC. THE TRUCK DRIVER WAS UNAWARE THAT WRIGHT WAS ENGAGED WITH HIS WHEELS AND DROVE ON, DRAGGING WRIGHT UNDERNEATH. WRIGHT WAS TAKEN TO HOWARD MEMORIAL HOSPITAL BEFORE BEING TRANSFERRED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL. NO WORD YET ON HIS CONDITION.

FORMER BASKETBALL COACH ON TRIAL FOR MOLESTATION JKB 6/30/11

  • A FORMER VARSITY BASKETBALL COACH AT ST VINCENT DE PAUL HIGH SCHOOL HAS BEEN SCHEDULED TO STAND TRIAL FOR MOLESTING ONE OF HIS STUDENT BASKET BALL PLAYERS.

JEFF NEHMENS, CEO OF SHAMROCK MATERIALS IN PETALUMA, IS ACCUSED OF SENDING THE PLAYER EXPLICIT TEXT MESSAGES, KISSING HER ON THE LIPS AND HUGGING HER OVER A 3 MONTH PERIOD IN 2009. IF CONVICTED, NEHMANS COULD BE REQUIRED TO SERVE UP TO A YEAR IN JAIL AND REGISTER AS A SEX OFFENDER FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE.

REDEVELOPMENT AGENCIES ARE ELIMINATED JKB 6/30/11

  • GOVERNOR JERRY BROWN SIGNED A NUMBER OF BUDGET TRAILER BILLS YESTERDAY INCLUDING ONE THAT ELIMINATES THE STATES REDEVELOPMENT AGENCIES, AND ANOTHER THAT GIVES AN OPTION FOR THEM TO CONTINUE TO OPERATE.

ASSEMBLY BILL 26 ELIMINATED RDAS, WHILE AB 27 ALLOWS THEM TO CONTINUE IF VOLUNTARY PAYMENTS ARE MADE TO SCHOOLS, FIRE AND TRANSIT DISTRICTS. UKIAH CITY OFFICIALS SAY THE INITIAL ESTIMATE OF HOW MUCH IT WOULD COST FOR THE CITY TO EXERCISE THAT OPTION IS SOMEWHERE BETWEEN $1.7 AND $1.8 MILLION DOLLARS, FOLLOWED BY AN ADDITIONAL $300,000 TO $400,000 A YEAR. IF THE CITY IS UNABLE OR UNWILLING TO COME UP WITH THE MONEY, THE MOST IMMEDIATE IMPACT WOULD BE REPLACING THE $600,000 TO $900,000 A YEAR THE CITY HAS BEEN USING IN REDEVELOPMENT FUNDS TO PAY CITY EMPLOYEES.

MOLESTATION ARREST JKB 6/30/11

  • A SONOMA COUNTY MAN SENT TO PRISON IN 1997 FOR THE INFAMOUS BEATING OF A WINDSOR TEENAGER OVER THE COLOR OF HIS SHIRT, HAS BEEN ARRESTED AGAIN, THIS TIME FOR CHILD MOLESTATION.

32 YEAR OLD JOSE JUAN MADRID HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH THE SEXUAL MOLESTATION OF A 6 YEAR OLD GIRL LAST MONTH. MADRID WAS 17 WHEN HE AND AN ACCOMPLICE WERE TRIED AS ADULTS FOR THE GANG RELATED BEATING OF 16 YEAR OLD DYLAN KATS IN 1996 BECAUSE HE WAS WEARING A RED SHIRT. KATS SUFFERED BRAIN DAMAGE AND WAS IN A COMA FOR 10 WEEKS. MADRID WAS SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS IN PRISON AND WAS RELEASED IN 2008.

THERE IS ALSO AN OPT OUT OPTION THAT WILL BE AVAILABLE FROM THE PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION, BUT WILL MOST LIKELY COME AT AN ADDITIONAL COST.   • THE UKIAH VALLEY SANITATION DISTRICT WILL BE HOLDING A PUBLIC HEARING TONIGHT ON PROPOSED SEWER RATE HIKES THAT WOULD AMOUNT JUST SHORT OF A 31% INCREASE OVER THE NEXT 4 YEARS.

MURDER RE-ARREST JKB 6/29/11

  • A MAN WHO HAD BEEN ARRESTED AND THEN RELEASED IN CONNECTION WITH A SHOOTING IN CLEARLAKE THAT INJURED 5 PEOPLE AND LEFT A 4 YEAR OLD BOY DEAD, WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AGAIN ON TUESDAY.

PROSECUTORS SAY THEY HAD DEVELOPED SUFFICIENT EVIDENCE TO CHARGE 23 YEAR OLD ORLANDO LOPEZ WITH MURDER. ANOTHER MAN CHARGED IN THE CASE, 21 YEAR OLD PAUL BRADEN, PLEADED NOT GUILTY IN COURT YESTERDAY. POLICE ARE STILL SEARCHING FOR A THIRD SUSPECT IN THE CASE, 29 YEAR OLD KEVIN STONE. ALL THREE MEN ARE BELIEVED TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SHOOTING THAT KILLED 4 YEAR OLD SKYLAR RAPP ON JUNE 18TH.

  • A SANTA ROSA MAN WHO DIED MONDAY EVENING AFTER FALLING INTO LAKE SONOMA FOLLOWING WHAT MAY HAVE BEEN A MEDICAL EMERGENCY WAS IDENTIFIED AS 39 YEAR OLD ERIC BROWN.

BROWN HAD COMPLAINED TO HIS MOTHER THE HE WASNT FELLING WELL EARLIER IN THE DAY BEFORE FALLING OVERBOARD FROM A DOCKED CABIN CRUISER NEAR THE ISLAND VIEW GROUP CAMP AT AROUND 7:30 PM. HIS CAUSE OF DEATH HAS NOT YET BEEN DETERMINED.

APPARENT SUICIDE ATTEMPT JKB 6/29/11

  • A WASHINGTON STATE WOMAN VISITING FORT BRAGG WITH HER HUSBAND, JUMPED OFF THE 2ND STORY BALCONY OF HER ROOM AT THE NORTH CLIFF MOTEL, IN AN APPARENT SUICIDE ATTEMPT LAST TUESDAY.

RESPONDING POLICE FOUND THE UNCONSCIOUS WOMAN LYING FACE DOWN IN THE BUSHES NEAR THE BASE OF THE MOTEL AT AROUND 11:30 PM. AFTER REGAINING CONSCIOUSNESS, SHE COULD NOT REMEMBER WHERE SHE WAS OR ANY EVENTS LEADING UP TO HER FALL. THE WOMAN REPORTEDLY HAS A HISTORY OF SUICIDAL TENDENCIES AND HAD BEEN DRINKING ALCOHOL WITH HER HUSBAND JUST PRIOR TO THE FALL.

SERIAL KILLER VICTIM FOUND JKB 6/29/11

  • POLICE HAVE FOUND THE REMAINS OF A WALNUT CREEK WOMAN WHO WAS KIDNAPPED, RAPED AND MURDERED BY THE SERIAL KILLER KNOWN AS THE I-5 STRANGLER 34 YEARS AFTER SHE WAS KILLED.

THE BODY OF 21 YEAR OLD ELLEN BURLEIGH WAS RECOVERED FROM A DRY RIVERBED NEAR LAKE BERRYESSA. ROGER REECE KIBBE WAS CONVICTED OF THE MURDER OF BURLEIGH AND 5 OTHER WOMEN IN 2009. AS PART OF A PLEA AGREEMENT, HE AGREED TO HELP LOCATE HER BODY. KIBBE WAS IN PRISON FOR STRANGLING A TEEN PROSTITUTE WHEN HE WAS CHARGED IN 2009 WITH MURDERING 6 WOMEN AND DROPPING THEIR BODIES ALONG FREEWAYS BETWEEN 1977 AND 1987.

  • AN AREA 2 MILES SOUTH SOUTH WEST OF ANDERSON SPRINGS AND 5 MILES WEST OF MIDDLETOWN HAS BEEN RATTLED BY A SERIES OF SMALL EARTHQUAKES THIS MORNING.

THE FIRST QUAKE MEASURED 3.5 IN MAGNITUDE AND STRUCK AT 4:13 AM. IT OCCURRED IN THE SAME PLACE AS A 2.9 MAGNITUDE QUAKE YESTERDAY. IT HAS BEEN FOLLOWED BY 3 AFTERSHOCKS MEASURING 1.0, 1.8 AND 2.3 IN MAGNITUDE.

MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT JKB 6/29/11

  • A UKIAH WOMAN RIDING A MOTORCYCLE WAS SEVERELY INJURED WHEN SHE WAS STRUCK BY A CAR AT THE INTERSECTION OF WEST GOBBIE AND SOUTH OAK STREETS ON MONDAY.

ACCORDING TO THE UKIAH POLICE DEPARTMENT, 54 YEAR OLD GAIL CARGILE WAS RIDING WESTBOUND ON GOBBIE STREET WHEN 65 YEAR OLD ALICE HAWLEY OF COVELO TURNED LEFT ONTO OAK STREET, STRIKING THE LEFT SIDE OF CARGILES BIKE. CARGILE SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES AND WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER, BEFORE BEING AIRLIFTED TO A HOSPITAL OUT OF THE AREA FOR FURTHER TREATMENT.

KIDNAPPERS CAUGHT JKB 6/29/11

  • A HUMBOLDT COUNTY COUPLE WANTED FOR THE KIDNAPPING, BEATING, AND ROBBERY OF A EUREKA MAN WERE ARRESTED AFTER A CITIZEN PHONED IN A TIP TO POLICE ON MONDAY.

37 YEAR OLD CHANDLER NELSON, AND 32 YEAR OLD GINGER HOWARD WERE ARRESTED WITHOUT INCIDENT AT AN APARTMENT COMPLEX IN EUREKA.

STATE BUDGET DEAL JKB 6/29/11

  • WITH JUST DAYS BEFORE THE END OF THE FISCAL YEAR, STATE LAWMAKERS HAVE PASSED A BUDGET PACKAGE THAT SUPPOSEDLY ALREADY HAS GOVERNOR BROWNS APPROVAL.

THE PACKAGE CLOSES THE STATES CURRENT $9.6 BILLION DOLLAR BUDGET DEFICIT, BUT ASSUMES THE STATE WILL SEE A $4 BILLION INCREASE IN REVENUE OVER THE NEXT YEAR. IF THAT FAILS TO HAPPEN, A SERIES OF TRIGGER CUTS WOULD BE IMPLEMENTED LATER IN THE YEAR. ALSO, REDEVELOPMENT AGENCIES DID NOT SURVIVE THE BUDGET AXE, AND ARE SCHEDULED FOR ELIMINATION. REDEVELOPMENT BACKERS HAVE THREATENED TO SUE IF THAT PORTION OF THE BUDGET IS SIGNED BY THE GOVERNOR.

CITY OF UKIAH ADOPTS BUDGET WITH 4 DAY WORK WEEK JKB 6/29/11

  • THE CITY OF UKIAH APPROVED A $58 MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET FOR THE NEXT FISCAL YEAR THAT INCLUDES MOVING TO A 4 DAY WORK WEEK, WITH CITY OFFICES CLOSING ON FRIDAYS.

THE 36 HOUR WORK WEEK IS EXPECTED TO SAVE THE CITY $1 MILLION DOLLARS, AND REPRESENTS A 10% PAY CUT FOR CITY EMPLOYEES. THE BUDGET PASSED ON A VOTE OF 3 TO 1 WITH COUNCIL MEMBER CRANE DISSENTING. COUNCIL MEMBER BALDWIN WAS ABSENT.

  • THE STATE TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION HAS APPROVED THE SPENDING OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS FOR SEVERAL ROAD PROJECTS ON THE NORTH COAST, INCLUDING SOME IN LAKE AND MENDOCINO COUNTIES.

MENDOCINO COUNTY WILL RECEIVE $9 MILLION TO REPLACE THE GREENWOOD CREEK BRIDGE ON HIGHWAY 1 NEAR ELK, AND $3 MILLION DOLLARS TO DECOMMISSION AN OLD STRETCH OF HIGHWAY 101 NEAR CONFUSION HILL THAT WAS BYPASSED WITH THE NEW BRIDGE, BEFORE IT FALLS INTO THE EEL RIVER. IN LAKE COUNTY, $6.1 MILLION DOLLARS WAS APPROVED FOR THE REPAVING OF SEVERAL STRETCHES ON HIGHWAYS 29 AND 53.

  • A GUALALA MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER SETTING HIS BOYFRIENDS PERSONAL BELONGINGS ON FIRE AFTER AN ARGUMENT SUNDAY.

46 YEAR OLD DARIN DAWSON ALLEGEDLY PILED 63 YEAR OLD DANIEL MONDRAGONS BELONGINGS AGAINST AN EXTERIOR WALL OF A SHED AT THE HOME THEY SHARED ON TICKLED PINK DRIVE JUST BEFORE 11 AM. HE THEN DOUSED THEM WITH GASOLINE, LIT THEM ON FIRE AND LEFT. OTHER RESIDENTS OF THE PROPERTY EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE, BUT NOT BEFORE IT CAUGHT THE SHED ON FIRE. DAWSON WAS LATER LOCATED BY DEPUTIES HIDING IN A SHED ON ANOTHER NEARBY PROPERTY.

KIDNAPPERS SOUGHT JKB 6/28/11

  • A EUREKA COUPLE IS BEING SOUGHT IN CONNECTION WITH THE KIDNAPPING, ASSAULT, AND ROBBING OF A 40 YEAR OLD EUREKA MAN ON FRIDAY.

37 YEAR OLD CHANDLER NELSON AND 32 YEAR OLD GINGER HOWARD ALLEGEDLY KIDNAPPED THE MAN AND DROVE HIM AROUND CUTTEN IN A RED VAN. THE VICTIM WAS KNOCKED UNCONSCIOUS DURING THE ABDUCTION. HE WAS EVENTUALLY ABLE TO ESCAPE WHEN THE VAN SLOWED AT AN INTERSECTION. NELSON IS DESCRIBED AS A WHITE MALE WITH BLACK HAIR, BLUE EYES, 6 FEET 2 INCHES TALL AND WEIGHING 165 POUNDS. HOWARD IS DESCRIBED AS A WHITE WOMAN, 5 FEET 2INCHES TALL, WEIGHING 115 POUNDS, WITH STRAWBERRY BLOND HAIR AND GREEN EYES. POLICE SAY THE COUPLE HAVE CONNECTIONS ALL ACROSS NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, AND COULD BE ANYWHERE IN HUMBOLDT, DEL NORTE, OR MENDOCINO COUNTIES.

MAN DIES AFTER FALLING INTO LAKE SONOMA JKB 6/28/11

  • A 39 YEAR OLD SANTA ROSA MAN DIED AFTER FALLING INTO LAKE SONOMA FOLLOWING WHAT MAY HAVE BEEN A MEDICAL EMERGENCY MONDAY EVENING.

THE MAN HAD COMPLAINED THAT HE WASNT FEELING WELL EARLIER IN THE DAY. HE AND HIS MOTHER WERE ON A LARGE CABIN CRUISER TETHERED TO THE SHORE NEAR THE ISLAND VIEW GROUP CAMP. THE MOTHER WAS AT THE OPPOSITE END OF THE BOAT WHEN SHE HEARD HER SON FALL THROUGH THE RAILING AND INTO THE WATER AT AROUND 7:30 PM. HE WAS FACE DOWN AND NON RESPONSIVE IN THE WATER WHEN SHE GOT TO HIM. SHE WAS ABLE TO PULL HIM TO SHORE, BUT HE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD A SHORT TIME LATER. HIS NAME HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED.

MISSING MAN IDENTIFIED JKB 6/28/11

  • A MAN WHO WENT MISSING AFTER FALLING OUT OF HIS BOAT ON TOMALES BAY OVER THE WEEKEND HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS 48 YEAR OLD BACH VAN NGUYEN OF VACAVILLE.

NGUYEN WAS TAKING A GROUP OF FRIENDS AND FAMILY BETWEEN LAWSONS LANDING AND A BEACH TOWARD THE TIP OF TOMALES POINT IN A 12 FOOT ALUMINUM BOAT. HE HAD JUST DROPPED PEOPLE OFF AT THE LANDING AND WAS RETURNING TO THE BEACH WHEN A WITNESS USING BINOCULARS, SAW HIM FALL OUT OF THE BOAT NEAR THE MOUTH OF THE BAY.

FIRE THREATENS HOMES JKB 6/28/11

  • QUICK ACTION BY FIREFIGHTERS KEPT A FIRE THAT THREATENED SEVERAL HOMES ON THE ROBINSON RANCHERIA FROM DOING ANY SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.

THE BLAZE, ON MANZANITA CIRCLE ACROSS FROM ACORN DRIVE WAS REPORTED AT ABOUT 4 PM. IT BURNED APPROXIMATELY 7 ACRES AND THREATENED 4 OR 5 NEARBY HOMES BEFORE BEING BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL. THE FIRE DID SCORCH SOME FENCES, BUT CAUSED NO DAMAGE TO THE HOMES. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

ARSON INVESTIGATION JKB 6/28/11

  • AUTHORITIES ARE CONTINUING THEIR INVESTIGATION INTO A FIRE THAT DESTROYED A BRAND NEW MOBILE HOME ON THE ELEM INDIAN COLONY EARLY SATURDAY MORNING AS ARSON.

THE OWNERS OF THE HOME HAD TAKEN POSSESSION OF IT JUST THE DAY BEFORE IT BURNED TO THE GROUND. CRAIGHEAD AND 19 YEAR OLD RACHELLE KAHLEN WERE ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH 2ND DECREE BURGLARY AND CRIMINAL CONSPIRACY.

ACCORDING THE INITIAL INVESTIGATION, ARCHER WAS WATER SKIING BEHIND A BOAT BEING PILOTED BY 39 YEAR OLD CHRISTIAN SPECKMAN OF SAN FRANCISCO. SPECKMAN REPORTEDLY MADE A SHARP TURN BEFORE REACHING THE SHORELINE WITH THE INTENT THAT ARCHER WOULD RELEASE THE SKI LINE AND GLIDE INTO SHORE. FATAL MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT JKB 6/22/11

  • A MOTORCYCLIST WAS KILLED IN A COLLISION AT THE INTERSECTION HIGHWAY 53 AND DAM ROAD SUNDAY NIGHT.

ACCORDING TO THE CHP, 53 YEAR OLD BRIAN CHATFILED WAS RIDING NORTHBOUND ON HIGHWAY 53 WHEN HE ENTERED THE INTERSECTION JUST BEFORE 7 PM AND COLLIDED WITH THE PASSENGER SIDE OF A VEHICLE BEING DRIVEN BY 29 YEAR OLD JEREMY SCHENK OF CLEARLAKE, AS HE WAS MAKING A LEFT TURN FROM NORTHBOUND HIGHWAY 53 UNDER A GREEN LIGHT. CHATFIELD WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AFTER BEING TRANSPORTED TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL.

  • AUTHORITIES ARE INVESTIGATING A SUSPICIOUS FIRE THAT DESTROYED A VACANT DOUBLE WIDE MOBILE HOME ON CARSON WAY IN NICE EARLY MONDAY MORNING.

THE HOME WAS FULLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES BY THE TIME FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED AT AROUND 3:30 AM. THE STRUCTURE WAS A TOTAL LOSS. THE MOBILE HOME HAD BEEN VACANT FOR SOME TIME AND THERE WAS NO POWER OR WATER TO THE HOME. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

POLICE SAY THE BOY BECAME ANGRY AFTER BEING PLACED ON RESTRICTION AND PUT DRANO DRAIN CLEANER IN HIS MOTHERS COFFEE. SHE WAS ABLE TO TASTE THE CHEMICAL IMMEDIATELY AND INGESTED ONLY A SMALL AMOUNT. THE BOY ADMITTED TO PUTTING THE POISON IN HIS MOTHERS COFFEE, AND STATED HE WOULD EITHER KILL HIMSELF OR HIS MOTHER IF HE HAD ANOTHER CHANCE.

BOMB THREAT JKB 6/21/11

  • A CROWD OF PEOPLE AT LIONS HALL IN FORT BRAGG WERE FORCED TO EVACUATE THE BUILDING AFTER A BOMB THREAT WAS CALLED INTO THE FORT BRAGG POLICE DEPARTMENT SATURDAY.

POLICE RECEIVED THE CALL AT AROUND 11 PM. A FEMALE JUVENILE CALLER USING A PAYPHONE STATED THERE WAS A BOMB IN LIONS HALL AND IT WOULD DETONATE WITHIN A HALF HOUR. POLICE EVACUATED THE BUILDING AND SEVERAL NEARBY RESIDENCES. A SEARCH DETERMINED THE CALL HAD BEEN A HOAX. POLICE ARE NOW WORKING TO IDENTIFY THE CALLER.

DOWNTOWN UKIAH POST OFFICE WILL CLOSE JKB 6/21/11

  • THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY THAT THE HISTORIC DOWNTOWN UKIAH POST OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED.

DOWNTOWN OPERATIONS WILL BE MOVED TO THE NORTH OAK STREET POSTAL ANNEX. THE CONSOLATION IS PART OF A NATIONWIDE POSTAL SERVICE EFFORT TO CUT COSTS AND BECOME MORE EFFICIENT. HE ALSO APPARENTLY ATTEMPTED TO GAIN ENTRY INTO A HOME WHILE TRYING TO AVOID POLICE. HE EVENTUALLY RETURNED TO THE SCENE OF THE CRIME AND PUT UP A FIGHT WHILE BEING ARRESTED. TWO DEPUTIES SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES DURING THE ARREST, WHILE KUMAR SUFFERED A BRIEF BOUT OF UNCONSCIOUSNESS. ALL 3 WERE TREATED AT THE UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER AND RELEASED. THE DEPUTIES RETURNED TO WORK. KUMAR WENT TO JAIL.
