  • MENDOCINO COUNTY AUTHORITIES ARE SEARCHING FOR A MENDOCINO REDWOOD EMPLOYEE WHO DISAPPEARED WHILE ON HIS LUNCH BREAK AT THE ALBION BLUFFS WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON.

33 YEAR OLD ERIC GRANT OF FORT BRAGG WAS REPORTED MISSING AT AROUND 6 PM AFTER COMPANY OFFICIALS DISCOVERED HIS WORK TRUCK NEAR THE BLUFFS. MARIJUANA RELATED SHOOTING JKB 10/29/10

  • A LAYTONVILLE MAN WAS SHOT IN THE FACE IN WHAT POLICE DESCRIBE AS A MARIJUANA RELATED INCIDENT YESTERDAY MORNING.

ACCORDING TO INVESTIGATORS, 19 YEAR OLD WILLIAM GRAVES AND THE UNNAMED SUSPECT WERE ENGAGED IN A MARIJUANA OPERATION IN THE BELL SPRINGS ROAD AREA. AN ALTERCATION BETWEEN THE TWO ENDED WHEN GRAVES WAS SHOT ONCE IN THE FACE AT AROUND 11 AM. HE WAS TRANSPORTED BY AMBULANCE TO HOWARD MEMORIAL HOSPITAL IN WILLITS AND THEN AIRLIFTED TO A HOSPITAL OUT OF THE COUNTY FOR TREATMENT. NO WORD YET ON HIS CONDITION. WITNESSES WHO WERE AT THE SCENE AT THE TIME OF THE SHOOTING ARE BEING QUESTIONED AND THE INVESTIGATION IS CONTINUING. THE SUSPECTS NAME HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED AND SO FAR NO ARRESTS HAVE BEEN MADE.

KNIFE ATTACKER SOUGHT JKB 10/28/10

  • FORT BRAGG POLICE ARE LOOKING FOR A SUSPECT WHO ATTACKED ANOTHER MAN ON THE FRONT PORCH OF HIS HOME WITH A KNIFE MONDAY EVENING.

POLICE WERE CALLED TO THE HOME OF 45 YEAR OLD BRYAN HARROUN AT AROUND 8:30 PM. HE REPORTED THAT THE UNKNOWN SUSPECT BECAME ANGRY AND ATTEMPTED TO STAB HIM WITH A KNIFE AFTER BEING ASKED TO LEAVE THE PROPERTY. THE SUSPECT FLED BEFORE POLICE ARRIVED AND AN ENSUING SEARCH FAILED TO LOCATE HIM. THE ATTACKER IS DESCRIBED AS A WHITE MALE ADULT, APPROXIMATELY 5 FEET 9 INCHES TALL WITH A MEDIUM BUILD, WEARING PRESCRIPTION GLASSES. HE WAS WEARING A BLACK OR DARK BROWN JACKET OVER A GREY HOODED SWEATSHIRT, JEANS, AND A BEANIE STYLE CAP. THE VICTIM SAID HE SAW DARKER HAIR WITH GREY BENEATH THE EDGE OF THE CAP. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ABOUT THIS INCIDENT OR THE SUSPECT IS ASKED TO CONTACT THE FORT BRAGG POLICE DEPARTMENT.

WILLITS POLICE HELP CAPTURE WATSONVILLE KILLER JKB 10/28/10

  • A ROUTINE TRAFFIC STOP IN WILLITS LED TO THE ARREST OF A 17 YEAR OLD SUSPECT ACCUSED OF SHOOTING A STORE CLERK TO DEATH IN WATSONVILLE.

WILLITS POLICE PULLED OVER A CAR WITH AN UNIDENTIFIED JUVENILE AND 17 YEAR OLD CHRISTIAN SPEAKER AT 1:25 AM OCTOBER 20TH. THE JUVENILE TURNED OUT TO BE WANTED ON A PROBATION VIOLATION AND THE TWO WERE DETAINED. IT WAS LATER LEARNED THAT BOTH TEENS HAD ESCAPED FROM A TULARE COUNTY GROUP HOME 4 DAYS EARLIER. AFTER LEAVING THE HOME, THE TWO WENT TO THE WATSONVILLE AREA WHERE SPEAKER ALLEGEDLY ROBBED A CONVENIENCE STORE AND SHOT THE 32 YEAR OLD STORE CLERK DEAD AFTER BEING GIVEN THE MONEY. INVESTIGATORS BELIEVE THE TWO TEENS WERE ON THEIR WAY TO THE EUREKA AREA WHEN THEY WERE STOPPED IN WILLITS. SPEAKERS NAME WAS RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC EVEN THOUGH HE IS A JUVENILE BECAUSE SANTA CRUZ DISTRICT ATTORNEYS PLAN TO CHARGE HIM AS AN ADULT.

ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS AT THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH, POLICE PRESENCE AT THE HOSPITAL HAS BEEN INCREASED, PATIENT ACCESS TO HOSPITAL GROUNDS HAS BEEN RESTRICTED AND A SHUTTLE SERVICE IS NOW AVAILABLE TO TAKE STAFF TO THE PARKING LOT. THE BODY OF 54 YEAR OLD PSYCHIATRIC NURSE DONNA GROSS WAS FOUND IN A HOSPITAL COURTYARD SATURDAY EVENING. 37 YEAR OLD PATIENT INMATE JESS WILLARD MASSEY HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH HER MURDER. MASSEY HAS A LONG HISTORY OF MENTAL ILLNESS AND HAS BEEN A RESIDENT AT THE HOSPITAL SINCE BEING DECLARED LEGALLY INSANE IN 1993.

SENTENCE FOR BURGLARY OF DEAD FAMILYS HOME JKB 10/28/10

  • A REDWOOD CITY WOMAN WHO, ALONG WITH HER BOYFRIEND, PLEADED NO CONTEST TO BURGLARIZING THE HOME OF A SONOMA VALLEY FAMILY AFTER THEY WERE KILLED IN A CAR CRASH LAST YEAR, WAS SENTENCED TO A YEAR IN JAIL AND GIVEN 5 YEARS PROBATION YESTERDAY.

PROSECUTORS ARGUED THAT 30 YEAR OLD AMBER TRUE SHOULD SERVE AT LEAST 6 YEARS IN PRISON FOR THE NOVEMBER 30TH BURGLARY AT THE HOME OF JOHN AND SUSAN MALONEY, WHO, ALONG WITH THEIR CHILDREN, AGES 8 AND 5, WERE KILLED IN A TRAFFIC COLLISION A MONTH EARLIER, SAYING THE COUPLE KNEW THE FAMILY WAS DEAD. SONOMA COUNTY JUDGE ARTHUR WICK HOWEVER SAID THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE TRUE AND HER BOYFRIEND, 27 YEAR OLD MICHAEL GUITIERREZ KNEW WHY THE HOUSE WAS EMPTY BEFORE THE ROBBERY. GUITIERREZ WAS SENTENCED TO 8 YEARS IN PRISON EARLIER THIS MONTH, DUE IN PART TO A LONG CRIMINAL HISTORY AND COMMITTING THE CRIME WHILE ON FELONY PROBATION. WITH TIME SERVED, TRUE COULD BE RELEASED AS EARLY AS NEXT SPRING.

  • THE CHP HAS RELEASED MORE INFORMATION ON A VEHICLE BEING SOUGHT IN CONNECTION WITH THE HIT AND RUN ACCIDENT THAT INJURED ONE OF THE RIDERS IN THE GRANFONDO BICYCLE RACE IN SONOMA COUNTY OCTOBER 9TH.

AUTHORITIES SAY THE SUV THAT STRUCK 57 YEAR OLD ANOUSH ZEBARJADAIN WAS MOST LIKELY A 1991 TO 1994 MAROON COLORED FORD EXPLORER. WITNESSES SAID THE DRIVER WAS ACTING AGGRESSIVELY AND DRIVING ERRATICALLY JUST BEFORE THE COLLISION AND MAY HAVE STRUCK THE RIDER INTENTIONALLY. ZEBARJADAIN SUFFERED HEAD INJURIES AND WAS IN THE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT AT SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL FOR SEVERAL DAYS. HE HAS SINCE BEEN RELEASED.   • NORTH COAST CONGRESSMAN MIKE THOMPSON IS WARNING SENIORS ABOUT A MAILER BEING SENT AROUND THE COUNTY THAT CLAIMS CUTS TO MEDICARE ARE PENDING.

THOMPSON SAYS THE MAILER, FROM THE NATIONAL PROCESSING CENTER, IS A SCAM AND INCLUDES A RETURN MAIL CARD THAT ASKS FOR PERSONAL INFORMATION. THOMPSON SAID THE MAILER IS NOT OFFICIAL OR FACTUAL AND SHOULD BE IGNORED BY SENIORS. HE ADDED THAT CONGRESS IS INVESTIGATING.

· THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL HAS UNANIMOUSLY VOTED TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO CAN RECEIVE HELP WITH ELECTRIC BILLS THROUGH THE UKIAH CARES PROGRAM.

THE COUNCIL AGREED WITH ELECTRIC UTILITY DIRECTOR MEL GRANDI TO INCREASE THE PROGRAMS FUNDING BY $120,000, AS WELL AS INCREASE THE INCOME GUIDELINES SO MORE PEOPLE ARE ELIGIBLE.   • 29 YEAR OLD SONOMA COUNTY RESIDENT JOSHUA BEGLEY WAS SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON WITHOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF PAROLE YESTERDAY FOR THE STABBING DEATH OF WORLD RENOWNED GUITAR MAKER TAKU SAKASHITA.

BEGLEY MAINTAINED HIS INNOCENCE YESTERDAY, SAYING IN A WRITTEN STATEMENT THROUGH HIS ATTORNEY THAT THE COURT WAS SENTENCING THE WRONG PERSON. ACCORDING TO PROSECUTORS BEGLEY ATTACKED SAKASHITA IN HIS ROHNERT PARK GUITAR SHOP FEBRUARY 11TH, STABBED HIM NUMEROUS TIMES AND LEFT HIS BODY IN BUSHES NEAR THE PARKING LOT, COVERED IN A JACKET THAT CONTAINED THE MURDER WEAPON AND GLOVES. BEGLEY CLAIMED HE FOUND THE BOOTS DUMPSTER DIVING. BEGLEYS ATTORNEY INDICATED THEY PLAN TO APPEAL.

CONTRA COSTA JAIL NURSE ATTACKED JKB 10/27/10

  • A CONTRA COSTA COUNTY JAIL NURSE WAS SEVERELY INJURED TUESDAY AFTER SHE WAS ATTACKED BY AN INMATE FEIGNING ILLNESS.

34 YEAR OLD AARON NYGAARD OF EL CERRITO WAS BEING HELD ON BURGLARY CHARGES WHEN HE FAKED A SEIZURE. AFTER HE APPEARED TO STABILIZE, HE STRUCK THE NURSE IN THE HEAD WITH A TABLE LAMP AND THEN CONTINUED TO FIGHT WITH DEPUTIES UNTIL HE WAS SUBDUED. THE NURSE WAS TAKEN TO JOHN MUIR MEDICAL CENTER IN WALNUT CREEK WITH A SEVERE HEAD INJURY. AUTHORITIES SAY THERE WAS NOTHING ABOUT NYGAARD THAT WOULD HAVE INDICATED HE WAS VIOLENT, AND THAT HE HAD NOT EXHIBITED ANY AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR PRIOR TO THE ATTACK. THE INCIDENT REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

PSYCHIATRIC NURSE WAS STRANGLED JKB 10/27/10

  • AN AUTOPSY HAS CONFIRMED THAT A PSYCHIATRIC NURSE WHO WAS KILLED BY A MENTALLY ILL PATIENT INMATE OVER THE WEEKEND WAS STRANGLED TO DEATH.

ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, 54 YEAR OLD DONNA GROSS WAS ATTACKED AND KILLED BY 37 YEAR OLD JESS WILLARD MASSEY AT NAPA STATE PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL SOMETIME AFTER THE DINNER BREAK SATURDAY NIGHT. GROSS HAD WORKED AS A PSYCHIATRIC TECHNICIAN AT THE HOSPITAL FOR THE PAST 14 YEARS. MASSEY IS BEING HELD AT THE NAPA COUNTY JAIL ON SUSPICION OF MURDER. MASSEY HAS BEEN INCARCERATED AT THE HOSPITAL SINCE BEING FOUND LEGALLY INSANE IN 1993.

FIRE THAT KILLED CATS DUE TO FAULTY WIRING JKB 10/27/10

  • NAPA COUNTY FIRE OFFICIALS SAY FAULTY ELECTRICAL WIRING WAS THE CAUSE OF A FIRE THAT DESTROYED A STRUCTURE KILLING 30 PUREBRED CATS ON SUNDAY.

THE CATS WERE BEING HOUSED IN AN OUTBUILDING BEHIND THE MAIN HOME OF A WOMAN WHO USED TO BREED AND SELL THE ANIMALS. ONLY TWO CATS WERE ABLE TO ESCAPE. THE OWNER ESTIMATED THE PEDIGREED CATS WERE WORTH ABOUT $500 EACH.

  • LAKE COUNTY AUTHORITIES ARE SEARCHING FOR TWO MEN CONSIDERED ARMED AND DANGEROUS AFTER A DARING HOME INVASION ROBBERY IN LOWER LAKE YESTERDAY MORNING.

ACCORDING TO POLICE, 27 YEAR OLD MICHELLE TRUONG AND 33 YEAR OLD DUSTIN LEE WILLSON WERE AWAKENED BY THE TWO MEN WHEN THEY ENTERED A HOME ON MORGAN VALLEY ROAD AT AROUND 8 AM. ONE OF THE MEN HELD A GUN TO WILLSONS HEAD AND A STRUGGLE ENSUED. HE WAS ABLE TO ESCAPE AND RUN TO A NEIGHBORS HOUSE AS ONE OF THE SUSPECTS FIRED SHOTS AT HIM. TRUONG WAS LOCKED IN A BATHROOM WHILE THE INTRUDERS RANSACKED THE HOUSE. ONE OF THE SUSPECTS ATTEMPTED TO FLEE IN HER CAR BUT WAS PREVENTED IN DOING SO BY A LOCKED GATE. THE OTHER SUSPECT WAS SEEN RUNNING TOWARD THE BACK OF THE PROPERTY WHERE INVESTIGATORS BELIEVE A CAR WAS WAITING. ONE SUSPECT IS DESCRIBED AS A BLACK MALE ADULT WITH SHORT WAVY HAIR AND TATTOOS ON HIS ARMS. HE WAS WEARING A BEANIE AND ALL BLACK CLOTHING. THE 2ND SUSPECT IS DESCRIBED AS A BLACK MALE ADULT WITH BRAIDED HAIR WEARING A BLACK BEANIE AND GRAY SWEATSHIRT. HE MAY BE ARMED WITH A 40 CALIBER HANDGUN. LOWER LAKE SCHOOLS IN THE AREA WERE LOCKED DOWN WHILE POLICE SEARCHED FOR THE SUSPECTS. AUTHORITIES HAVE NOT DETERMINED THE MOTIVE BEHIND THE HOME INVASION OR IF THE VICTIMS AND SUSPECTS KNEW EACH OTHER. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON THIS CRIME IS ASKED TO CONTACT THE LAKE COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT.

  • A POTTER VALLEY MAN WAS SHOT, TIED UP, AND BEATEN BY A GROUP OF 4 OR 5 MEN, IN WHAT HE BELIEVES WAS A MARIJUANA RELATED ROBBERY SATURDAY NIGHT.

45 YEAR OLD KEVIN PAUL ALLEN WAS IN HIS GARAGE ON DE SHIELDS RANCH ROAD WHEN HE WAS ASSAULTED BY SEVERAL HISPANIC MEN, ONE OF WHOM WAS CARRYING A RIFLE AT AROUND 10 PM. HE WAS SHOT IN THE RIGHT ARM, RESTRAINED WITH ROPE, DUCT TAPE, AND HANDCUFFS, AND THEN BEATEN. AFTER TAKING THE KEYS TO HIS PICK UP TRUCK, THE MEN PLACED ALLEN IN A SHED ON THE PROPERTY WHERE HE EVENTUALLY FREED HIMSELF AND ESCAPED TO A NEIGHBORS HOUSE TO CALL POLICE. THE NEIGHBOR TOOK ALLEN TO THE HOSPITAL. THE SUSPECTS WERE GONE BY THE TIME POLICE ARRIVED. ALLEN TOLD DEPUTIES THAT HE BELIEVED THE MEN WERE AFTER HIS 25 MARIJUANA PLANTS, HOWEVER THERE HAS BEEN NO CONFIRMATION THAT MARIJUANA OR ANY OTHER ITEMS WERE TAKEN. A DESCRIPTION OF THE INTRUDERS HAS NOT BEEN MADE AVAILABLE. DETECTIVES WERE UNABLE INTERVIEW THE VICTIM IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE EVENT DUE TO HIS INJURIES. ACCORDING TO THE CHP, 41 YEAR OLD SEAN HANNON WAS TRAVELING NORTHBOUND, WHEN HE ALLOWED HIS CAR TO DRIVE OFF THE EAST ROADWAY EDGE AT AROUND 11:15 AM. HE STRUCK A METAL PADDLE MARKER AND THEN WENT OVER A STEEP 50 FOOT EMBANKMENT WHERE THE CAR CAME TO REST AGAINST A TREE AND CAUGHT FIRE. THAT INFORMATION LED TO A SEARCH OF THE HOME WHERE ANOTHER 14 POUNDS OF MARIJUANA WAS DISCOVERED.

IN THE 2ND INCIDENT18 YEAR OLD SMANTHA BURGESS AND TWO PASSENGERS, ALL FROM RENO NEVADA WERE FOUND TRANSPORTING SEVERAL PLASTIC BUCKETS, TRIMMING SHEARS, AND OTHER ITEMS USED TO PROCESS MARIJUANA, ALONG WITH A HALF POUND OF WEED DURING A TRAFFIC STOP ON EAST PERKINS STREET ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON. THE 3 ADMITTED TO BEING IN THE AREA TO TRIM MARIJUANA. ALL 5 SUSPECTS IN BOTH STOPS WERE BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL FOR THE POSSESSION AND TRANSPORTATION OF MARIJUANA FOR SALE.

POOLS TO BE FIXED JKB 10/22/10

· THE CITY OF UKIAH POOLS AT TODD GROVE PARK WILL GET FIXED THANKS TO THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL VOTING TO ALLOW THE CITY TO LOAN ITSELF $148,000 FROM THE PARK DEVELOPMENT FEES TO PAY FOR REPAIRS.

THE CITY PLANS TO USE THE LOAN AND JUST OVER $42,300 IN PARK DEVELOPMENT MONEY PLUS A MATCHING STATE GRANT TO RENOVATE THE TWO POOLS. CITY OFFICIALS ARE HOPING REPAIRS CAN BEGIN BY FEBRUARY 2011. THE STATE GRANT STIPULATES THAT ALL WORK MUST BE COMPLETED BY DECEMBER OF NEXT YEAR.

MOM BUSTED FOR PAYING SON TO STAY HOME TO TRIM POT JKB 10/21/10

  • A UKIAH MOTHER WAS ARRESTED TUESDAY FOR ALLEGEDLY PAYING HER 15 YEAR OLD SON TO STAY HOME FROM SCHOOL AND TRIM MARIJUANA.

POLICE WERE CALLED TO THE HOME OF 46 YEAR OLD DENA PRICE AFTER A CITIZEN SPOTTED 7 FOOT TALL MARIJUANA PLANTS GROWING ABOVE HER BACKYARD FENCE. AT THE HOME POLICE FOUND 15 PLANTS BEING GROWN OUTDOORS AND APPROXIMATELY 11 POUNDS OF PROCESSED AND DRYING MARIJUANA IN THE GARAGE. THEY ALSO FOUND PRICES TEENAGED SON AND A 21 YEAR OLD WOMAN TRIMMING MARIJUANA. BOTH WERE BEING PAID FOR THE WORK. INVESTIGATORS SAY PRICES SON HAD STAYED HOME SICK FROM SCHOOL AND WAS ALLOWED TO USE MARIJUANA FROM THE GROW. PRICE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL ON CULTIVATION AND POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA FOR SALE CHARGES, CONTRIBUTING TO THE DELINQUENCY OF A MINOR, AND CHILD ENDANGERMENT. SHE WAS ALSO CITED FOR VIOLATING THE CITYS ORDINANCE AGAINST OUTDOOR MARIJUANA GROWING. CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES WERE NOTIFIED OF THE INCIDENT.

STORAGE BURGLARY ARRESTS JKB 10/21/10

  • A COMBINED EFFORT BY UKIAH POLICE AND THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT LED TO THE ARREST OF A UKIAH MAN ON BURGLARY CHARGES TUESDAY.

THE INCIDENT BEGAN WHEN UKIAH POLICE DETECTIVES FOLLOWED RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY SUSPECT, 35 YEAR OLD TONY MARSH TO A STORAGE FACILITY OUTSIDE THE CITY LIMITS. DURING THEIR INVESTIGATION THEY FOUND EVIDENCE THAT 4 OR 5 UNITS HAD BEEN BROKEN INTO. SINCE THE STORAGE FACILITY WAS IN COUNTY JURISDICTION, SHERIFFS DEPUTIES WERE CALLED TO THE SCENE. MARSH CONFESSED TO BREAKING INTO ONE OF THE STORAGE UNITS TO STEAL APPROXIMATELY $3000 WORTH OF DISC JOCKEY EQUIPMENT BUT DENIED BURGLARIZING THE OTHER UNITS. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL WHERE HE IS BEING HELD ON $67,500 BAIL.

ASSAULT ARREST JKB 10/21/10

  • A UKIAH WOMAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER ASSAULTING ANOTHER WOMAN WITH A 2 FOOT LONG PIECE OF PVC PIPE ON TUESDAY.

SHERIFFS DEPUTIES WERE CALLED TO THE LOCATION ON LAKERIDGE DRIVE AT AROUND 9:15 PM, WHERE THE VICTIM, 43 YEAR OLD LISA MCKINNEY REPORTED THAT SHE WAS INJURED AFTER 46 YEAR OLD PATRICIA HALL-PARKER STRUCK HER SEVERAL TIMES IN THE LEG WITH THE PLASTIC PIPE DURING AN ARGUMENT. HALL-PARKER WAS STILL AT THE LOCATION AND TAKEN INTO CUSTODY WITHOUT INCIDENT. SHE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL FOR ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON AND IS BEING HELD ON $30,000 BAIL.

HUMBOLDT COUNTY SUPERVISORS ENDORSE PROP 19 JKB 10/21/10

  • HUMBOLDT COUNTY SUPERVISORS HAVE THROWN THEIR SUPPORT BEHIND PROP 19, THE NOVEMBER BALLOT INITIATIVE THAT SEEKS TO LEGALIZE THE RECREATIONAL USE OF MARIJUANA.

THE BOARD HAD ORIGINALLY INDICATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE TAKING A POSITION ON THE MEASURE BUT DECIDED TO PUT IT TO A VOTE AFTER SUPERVISOR BONNIE NEELY ARGUED THAT THE BOARD COULD NOT IGNORE MARIJUANAS ROLE IN THE COUNTYS ECONOMIC FUTURE. THE BOARD THEN VOTED 4 TO 1 TO IN FAVOR OF THE INITIATIVE. MEANWHILE, THE CALIFORNIA STATE ASSOCIATION OF COUNTIES HAS COME OUT AGAINST PROP 19.

E-QUAKE AT THE GEYSERS UPGRADED JKB 10/21/10

  • AN EARTHQUAKE THAT RATTLED THE GEYSERS AREA TUESDAY MORNING, WAS UPGRADED BY GEOLOGISTS ON WEDNESDAY.

INITIALLY THOUGHT TO BE A 3.4 MAGNITUDE QUAKE, THE SEISMIC EVENT WAS OFFICIALLY RECORDED AS BEING 3.5 IN MAGNITUDE BY THE U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY YESTERDAY. THE QUAKE WAS CENTERED 4 MILES NORTH OF THE STEAM FIELDS AND STRUCK AT 10:51 AM. IT WAS THE 26TH QUAKE 3.0 OR LARGER TO STRIKE THE AREA SINCE THE FIRST OF THE YEAR.

FIRE THREATENS STRUCTURE JKB 10/21/10

  • QUICK ACTION BY FIREFIGHTERS AND A PAIR OF GOOD SAMARITANS WITH GARDEN HOSES HELPED KNOCK DOWN A FAST SPREADING VEGETATION FIRE THAT BRIEFLY THREATENED A STRUCTURE YESTERDAY.

A QUAD PULLING A LAWN MOWER SPARKED THE FIRE AT AROUND 2 PM. THE DRIVER OF THE QUAD AND A NEIGHBOR INITIALLY BEGAN FIGHTING THE BLAZE WITH GARDEN HOSES. FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED WITHIN 5 MINUTES AND KEPT THE FIRE CONTAINED TO LESS THAN 3 ACRES AS IT BURNED INTO A HEAVY TIMBER AREA NEAR A CREEK. A STRUCTURE IN DANGER OF BURNING WAS SAVED WITHOUT SUFFERING DAMAGE. THERE WERE NO REPORTS OF INJURIES.

OLD GROWTH FOREST TO BE SAVED JKB 10/21/10

  • A SECTION OF OLD GROWTH REDWOOD AND DOUGLAS FIR FOREST THAT WAS IN DANGER OF BEING HARVESTED, NOW LOOKS LIKE IT WILL BE PRESERVED, THANKS TO THE INTERVENTION OF A NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION.

THE SAVE THE REDWOODS LEAGUE HAS SIGNED AN EXCLUSIVE AGREEMENT TO PURCHASE THE 426 ACRE BURBECK TRACT, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS THE NOYO RIVER REDWOODS FOREST, FROM THE WILLITS REDWOOD COMPANY. THE FOREST, LOCATED 4 MILES WEST OF WILLITS IS FAMOUS FOR BEING HOME TO THE SWITCHBACK SECTION OF THE SKUNK TRAIN RUN AND CONTAINS 123 ACRES OF OLD GROWTH REDWOOD AND DOUG FIR FOREST. THE AGREEMENT REQUIRES THE LEAGUE TO PAY $7 MILLION TO THE WILLITS REDWOOD COMPANY BY APRIL 1ST 2011.

GAS PRICES RISE JKB 10/21/10-

  • YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED THAT GAS PRICES IN THE AREA HAVE RISEN DURING A TIME OF YEAR THAT THEY NORMALLY GO DOWN.

SINCE LABOR DAY, PUMP PRICES HAVE JUMPED SIGNIFICANTLY. THE AVERAGE PRICE FOR A GALLON OF REGULAR SELF SERVE UNLEADED IN CALIFORNIA IS NOW $3.15, UP 14 CENTS FROM A MONTH AGO AND 11 CENTS HIGHER THAN THIS TIME LAST YEAR. ANALYSTS SAY THE CAUSE OF THE PRICE SPIKE IS LARGELY BEING DRIVEN BY OIL INVESTORS AND NOT DUE TO SUPPLY ISSUES.

BODY FOUND BELOW ALBION BRIDGE JKB 10/20/10

  • THE BODY OF A MISSING ELK MAN WAS FOUND BELOW THE ALBION BRIDGE MONDAY MORNING.

ACCORDING TO THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT, 63 YEAR OLD LLOYD DEAN PEDERSEN WAS ALLEGEDLY DESPONDENT WHEN HE WAS REPORTED MISSING. THE REPORTING PARTY INDICATED PEDERSEN MIGHT BE IN THE AREA OF THE ALBION BRIDGE. DEPUTIES LOCATED PEDERSENS BODY AT THE WEST END OF THE ALBION RIVER CAMPGROUND BELOW THE BRIDGE AT AROUND 8:30 MONDAY MORNING. THE CAUSE OF DEATH IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

WOMAN INJURED IN CRASH JKB 10/20/10

  • A 40 YEAR OLD MENDOCINO WOMAN IDENTIFIED ONLY AS VICKY WAS SEVERELY INJURED WHEN SHE CRASHED INTO A TREE OFF HIGHWAY 1 JUST SOUTH OF NAVARRO RIDGE LAST NIGHT.

THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED AT AROUND 8:40 PM. SEVERAL PASSING MOTORISTS STOPPED AND HELPED THE VICTIM GET OUT OF HER CAR AS IT SLOWLY CAUGHT FIRE. AFTER SHE WAS REMOVED, THE VEHICLE BECAME FULLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE VICTIM WAS AIRLIFTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WITH MAJOR INJURIES. THE ACCIDENT SHUT DOWN TRAFFIC ON HIGHWAY 1 FOR MORE THAN 2 HOURS.

E-QUAKE JKB 10/20/10

  • A 3.4 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE SHOOK THE GEYSERS AREA YESTERDAY.

THE QUAKE OCCURRED AT 10:51 AM AND WAS CENTERED 4 MILES NORTH OF THE STEAM FIELDS. IT WAS FOLLOWED BY A DOZEN AFTERSHOCKS, RANGING FROM 1.2 TO 2.1 IN MAGNITUDE. YESTERDAYS EVENT WAS THE 26TH QUAKE 3.0 OR LARGER TO STRIKE THE GEYSERS SINCE THE FIRST OF THE YEAR.

ARCATA BUSINESSMAN KILLED IN PLANE CRASH JKB 10/20/10

  • A WELL KNOWN ARCATA BUSINESSMAN AND HIS 7 YEAR OLD SON WERE KILLED IN A PRIVATE PLANE CRASH IN GEORGIA ON SATURDAY.

KEITH NEWCOMER, CO OWNER OF THE ARCATA EXCHANGE FURNITURE STORE, WAS VISITING HIS SON IN GEORGIA. THE TWO WERE IN NEWCOMERS SELF BUILT SINGLE ENGINE PLANE WHEN THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED AND CAUGHT FIRE JUST AFTER TAKEOFF FROM GARVEY AIRFIELD IN MONTICELLO. THE ACCIDENT IS UNDER INVESTIGATION BY THE NTSB.

  • A 6 YEAR OLD SANTA ROSA GIRL WHO WAS SEVERELY INJURED IN A CRASH THAT KILLED HER MOTHER AND INJURED 3 OF HER SIBLINGS CAME OUT OF A MEDICALLY INDUCED COMA YESTERDAY.

HAILLIE SHIMMEL IS RECOVERING FROM INJURIES SHE RECEIVED IN THE OCTOBER 8TH CRASH. HER 18 YEAR OLD BROTHER SEBASTIAN HOLLINGWORTH WAS DRIVING THE FAMILY SUV WHEN HE LOOKED DOWN FOR A MOMENT, VEERED INTO THE ONCOMING LANE OF TRAFFIC, OVERCORRECTED AND THEN LOST CONTROL AND CRASHED. 43 YEAR OLD SHELLIE SHIMMEL DIED AT THE SCENE. HOLLINGWORTH AND TWO OTHER SISTERS AGES 13 AND 16, SUFFERED MINOR TO MODERATE INJURIES IN THE CRASH.

CAMP NUMBERS UP IN MENDOCINO COUNTY JKB 10/20/10

  • PLANT SEIZURES BY THE FEDERAL CAMPAIGN AGAINST MARIJUANA PLANTING OR CAMP SET A RECORD IN MENDOCINO COUNTY THIS YEAR.

STATEWIDE CAMP SEIZURES DROPPED SLIGHTLY FROM 4.4 MILLION PLANTS LAST YEAR TO 4.3 MILLION THIS YEAR. IN MENDOCINO COUNTY HOWEVER, SEIZURE NUMBERS JUMPED FROM 440,689 PLANTS LAST YEAR TO 572,680 PLANTS IN 2010. THOSE FIGURES DO NOT INCLUDE PLANTS SEIZED BY THE COUNTYS MARIJUANA ERADICATION TEAM OUTSIDE OF CAMPS 108 DAY ERADICATION SEASON. TO DATE, COMMET HAS SEIZED JUST OVER 541,000 POT PLANTS, INCLUDING THOSE TAKEN DURING CAMPS CAMPAIGN. LAKE COUNTY WAS THIRD ON CAMPS ERADICATION LIST THIS YEAR WITH 374,958 PLANTS SEIZED.

CRACK FOUND IN SAN MATEO BRIDGE JKB 10/20/10

  • A SECTION OF THE WESTBOUND LANE ON THE SAN MATEO BRIDGE WAS CLOSED YESTERDAY, AFTER CREWS FOUND A 10 INCH CRACK IN A STEEL BEAM DURING A ROUTINE INSPECTION.

THE AFFECTED BEAM, LOCATED UNDERNEATH THE BRIDGE DECK, IS SUPPOSED TO HELP SUPPORT THE BRIDGE DURING AN EARTHQUAKE. AUTHORITIES SAY THE CRACK DOES NOT POSE AN IMMEDIATE DANGER BUT NEEDS TO BE REPAIRED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THOSE REPAIRS ARE SCHEDULED TO TAKE PLACE THURSDAY MORNING. DRIVERS ARE ADVISED TO TAKE THE DUMBARTON OR BAY BRIDGE TO AVOID DELAYS.
