HOME OF DROWNED TEEN BURGLARIZED JKB 2/28/11

  • THE HOME OF A TEEN THAT DROWNED WHILE RAFTING ON A RAIN SWOLLEN CREEK NEAR WALNUT CREEK LAST WEEKEND, WAS BURGLARIZED WHILE HIS FAMILY WAS AT HIS BURIAL SERVICE ON THURSDAY.

THE FAMILY OF 16 YEAR OLD MATTHEW MILLER TOLD POLICE THEY RETURNED HOME FROM THE SERVICE TO FIND THE FRONT DOOR HAD BEEN FORCED OPEN AND ITEMS MISSING. THE BURGLARY OCCURRED SOMETIME BETWEEN 10 AM AND 12:30 PM. MILLER AND 17 YEAR OLD GAVIN POWELL BOTH DROWNED AFTER THEIR TWO PERSON RAFT OVERTURNED IN A FLOOD CONTROL CHANNEL FEBRUARY 19TH.

DOMESTIC ASSAULT ARREST JKB 2/28/11

  • A FORT BRAGG MAN WAS ARRESTED LAST WEEK AFTER CHOKING HIS GIRLFRIEND INTO UNCONSCIOUSNESS DURING A DOMESTIC DISPUTE.

THE 48 YEAR OLD VICTIM TOLD POLICE THAT 54 MARK ALLEN NUEGEBAUER HAD COME UP BEHIND HER, PUT HER IN A CHOKE HOLD AND PULLED HER TO THE FLOOR, CUTTING OFF HER AIR SUPPLY UNTIL SHE PASSED OUT. SHE ALSO STATED THAT NUEGEBAUER TOLD HER THAT THE NEXT TIME HE WOULD FINISH HER OFF AND BURY HER ON THE PROPERTY. WEDNESDAYS ASSAULT ALLEGEDLY FOLLOWED TWO OTHER INCIDENTS THAT OCCURRED ON VALENTINES DAY AND SUPER BOWL SUNDAY. NEUGEBAUER WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL FOR SPOUSAL ABUSE AND MAKING CRIMINAL THREATS WITH BAIL SET AT $25,000.

HIGH SPEED CHASE AND CRASH JKB 2/28/11

  • A HIGH SPEED CHASE INVOLVING A MAN WHO ALLEGEDLY BURGLARIZED A CLOVERDALE HOME ENDED WHEN THE SUSPECT CRASHED HIS CAR NEAR WINDSOR SUNDAY AFTERNOON.

24 YEAR OLD JOSEPH REXFORD OF WINDSOR ALLEGEDLY SMASHED A SLIDING GLASS DOOR AT A HOME ON THERESA DRIVE JUST BEFORE 1 PM AND FLED WITH SEVERAL ITEMS, INCLUDING A GUN. WINDSOR POLICE SPOTTED HIS CAR HEADING SOUTH ON HIGHWAY 101 NEAR DRY CREEK, AND ATTEMPTED TO PULL HIM OVER. REXFORD REFUSED TO STOP AND LED POLICE ON A CHASE ON EASTSIDE ROAD IN HEALDSBURG AND ONTO SEVERAL RURAL ROADS WEST OF THE AIRPORT AT SPEEDS OF UP TO 100 MILES AN HOUR. HE EVENTUALLY RETURNED TO HIGHWAY 101 BEFORE LOOSING CONTROL AND CRASHING DOWN A GRASSY EMBANKMENT OFF THE SHILOH ROAD ONRAMP. HE SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES IN THE CRASH AND WAS BOOKED INTO THE SONOMA COUNTY JAIL ON A NUMBER OF CHARGES AFTER BEING RELEASED FROM THE HOSPITAL. HIS BAIL WAS SET AT $150,000.

  • FIRE INVESTIGATORS SAY A MASSIVE BLAZE THAT DESTROYED THE PIEDMONT LUMBER AND MILLWORK COMPANY YARD IN WALNUT CREEK LAST YEAR AND WAS INITIALLY THOUGHT TO BE SUSPICIOUS, WAS NOT DUE TO ARSON.

  • AFTER A NATIONWIDE SEARCH, THE CITY OF FORT BRAGG HAS CHOSEN A NEW POLICE CHIEF, AND IT TURNS OUT, THEY DIDNT HAVE TO LOOK FAR TO FIND ONE.

SCOTT MAYBERRY, A FORMER FORT BRAGG HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE, WAS CHOSEN OUT OF A FILED OF 34 APPLICANTS FROM ALL ACROSS THE COUNTY. MAYBERRY SERVED 5 YEARS WITH THE FORT BRAGG POLICE DEPARTMENT, 5 YEARS WITH THE PETALUMA POLICE DEPARTMENT AND 17 YEARS WITH THE REDDING POLICE DEPARTMENT, WHERE HE IS CURRENTLY A CAPTAIN. MAYBERRY MUST STILL COMPLETE THE REQUIRED BACKGROUND CHECK, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL AND MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS. IF ALL GOES WELL HE WILL BECOME THE CHIEF OF THE FORT BRAGG POLICE DEPARTMENT IN MID APRIL.

  • A PAIR OF SMALL EARTHQUAKE POPPED UP IN UNUSUAL PLACES YESTERDAY.

THE FIRST QUAKE OCCURRED AT 11:32 AM AND WAS CENTERED 5 MILES EAST OF HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE. IT MEASURED 2.5 IN MAGNITUDE. THE SECOND, A 2.2 MAGNITUDE QUAKE, OCCURRED AT 11:43 AM AND WAS CENTERED 14 MILES NORTH WEST OF CLOVERDALE.

BAIL RAISED FOR FUGITIVE JKB 2/25/11

  • A WANTED FUGITIVE OUT OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY WHO WAS INVOLVED IN A 12 HOUR STANDOFF WITH POLICE IN THE BROOKTRIALS AREA LATE TUESDAY AND EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING, HAD HIS BAIL AMOUNT RAISED SIGNIFICANTLY YESTERDAY.

36 YEAR OLD JASON FRICK OF MCKINLEYVILLE WAS ORIGINALLY BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL ON A NUMBER OF CHARGES WITH BAIL SET AT $200,000. WHEN HE SURRENDERED, OFFICERS FOUND HIM IN POSSESSION OF AN EXPLOSIVE INCENDIARY DEVICE, AND THE MATERIALS TO MAKE SEVERAL MORE. BASED ON CHARGES STEMMING FROM POSSESSING A DESTRUCTIVE DEVICE, HIS BAIL AMOUNT WAS RAISED TO $ 2 MILLION.

CRAIGSLIST SCAM WARNING JKB 2/25/11

  • THE LAKE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEYS OFFICE HAS ISSUED A WARNING TO LOCAL RESIDENTS TO BE CAUTIOUS WHEN USING CRAISGLIST, E-BAY OR OTHER CONSUMER EXCHANGE WEBSITES.

A RESIDENT WHO POSTED AN ITEM FOR SALE ON CRAIGSLIST AND WAS CONTACTED BY AN ALLEGED INTERESTED BUYER WHO SENT A COUNTERFEIT CHECK FOR SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS MORE THAN THE PURCHASE PRICE. THE SUSPECT THEN CONTACTED THE VICTIM BY PHONE AND STATED THEY HAD SENT THE WRONG AMOUNT AND THAT THE CHECK SHOULD BE CASHED AND THE OVERAGE RETURNED. FORTUNATELY, THE VICTIM CHECKED THE AUTHENTICITY OF THE CHECK AND DISCOVERED IT WAS FRAUDULENT BEFORE SENDING ANY MONEY. AUTHORITIES ARE ADVISING RESIDENTS TO BE WARY OF ONLINE TRANSACTIONS THAT APPEAR TO BE UNUSUAL.

IN THE DEAL WITH PROSECUTORS, 33 YEAR OLD RUBI ANN MARTINEZ WILL SERVE 6 YEARS IN STATE PRISON FOR THE DEATH OF 21 YEAR OLD ENRIQUE RAMIREZ ALVAREZ. ACCORDING TO INVESTIGATORS, IT IS BELIEVED THAT BOTH MARTINEZ AND ALVAREZ HAD BEEN DRINKING WHEN ALVAREZ FELL OUT OF THE BACK OF THE PICK UP ON HIGHWAY 101. AT SOME POINT MARTINEZ BECAME AWARE ALVAREZ WAS MISSING, BUT CONTINUED DRIVING AND DID NOT CALL AUTHORITIES. A PASSING MOTORIST SPOTTED AVLAREZ BODY AT AROUND 1:40 AM AND HE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE. MARTINEZ WILL BE OFFICIALLY SENTENCED MARCH 17TH.

  • THE BODIES OF TWO TEENAGE BOYS WHO DISAPPEARED AFTER GOING RAFTING NEAR WALNUT CREEK WERE FOUND ON SUNDAY.

THE BODY OF 16 YEAR OLD MATTHEW MILLER WAS LOCATED AT AROUND 11:30 AM NEAR CONCORD. THE BODY OF 17 YEAR OLD GAVIN POWELL WAS FOUND SEVERAL HOURS LATER A FEW MILES DOWN STREAM. THE BOYS WERE REPORTED MISSING JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT SATURDAY BY FAMILY MEMBERS WHEN THEY HAD NOT RETURNED IN THEIR TWO PERSON INFLATABLE RAFT BY LATE AFTERNOON. ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, THE BOYS LEFT ON THE TRIP DURING A STORM THAT DUMPED HEAVY RAIN, SWELLING THE CREEK TO A DANGEROUS LEVEL AND SPEED. AUTOPSIES ARE SCHEDULED FOR LATER THIS WEEK.

BURGLARS ARRESTED JKB 2/22/11

  • TWO NICE MEN WERE ARRESTED WITHIN HOURS OF BURGLARIZING THE AG UNLIMITED WAREHOUSE IN KELSEYVILLE EARLY MONDAY MORNING.

A SECURITY GUARD WITNESSED THE THEFT AT AROUND 7:20 AM AND CALLED POLICE, GIVING THEM A DESCRIPTION OF THE SUSPECTS VEHICLE. 50 YEAR OLD CRAIG ALLEN SNYDER WAS IDENTIFIED AS ONE OF THE POSSIBLE SUSPECTS. DEPUTIES LOCATED HIM AT HIS HOME AT AROUND 11:30 AM, WITH HIS CAR PARKED IN FRONT OF THE HOUSE, THAT MATCHED THE DESCRIPTION OF THE ONE INVOLVED IN THE BURGLARY. THE VEHICLE WAS FOUND TO BE LOADED WITH PROPERTY TAKEN FROM THE WAREHOUSE, AND MORE STOLEN ITEMS WERE FOUND INSIDE THE HOME. SNYDER AND HIS ACCOMPLICE, 57 YEAR OLD DENNIS BLAINE WERE ARRESTED WITHOUT INCIDENT AND BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL ON A NUMBER OF CHARGES. BOTH ARE BEING HELD ON $25,000 BAIL EACH.

CITY TO TRY TO SAVE RDA MONEY JKB 2/22/11

  • THE CITY OF UKIAH IS CONSIDERING THE ISSUANCE OF AS MUCH AS $18 MILLION DOLLARS IN BONDS FOR FUTURE REDEVELOPMENT PROJECTS, IN AN ATTEMPT TO AVOID THE STATES PLAN TO ELIMINATE REDEVELOPMENT AGENCIES AND RAID THEIR COFFERS.

UNDER A PROPOSAL SUBMITTED BY GOVERNOR JERRY BROWN, REDEVELOPMENT AGENCIES ACROSS THE STATE WOULD BE DISESTABLISHED BY JULY 1ST, AND THE RDA MONEY WOULD BE REDISTRIBUTED TO OTHER AREAS. CRITICS OF THE PLAN SAY LOCAL INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS WOULD GRIND TO A HALT. PROPONENTS CLAIM THE MONEY IS BEING MISUSED ANYWAY. IN AN EFFORT TO KEEP THE LOCAL RDA MONEY AVAILABLE FOR LOCAL USE, CITY OFFICIALS HAVE PROPOSED 3 SCENARIOS BUILT ON THE ISSUANCE OF BONDS, THAT WOULD EFFECTIVELY TIE UP THE EXISTING RDA MONEY, MAKING IT DIFFICULT FOR THE STATE TO RE-CLAIM. EACH SCENARIO HAS ITS OWN PROS AND CONS, AND EACH WILL BE DISCUSSED AT A SPECIAL MEETING SCHEDULED FOR 6 PM WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT THE UKIAH CONFERENCE CENTER.

· AN ONGOING EFFORT TO CRACK DOWN ON ILLICIT DRUG SALES IN LAKE COUNTY RESULTED IN SEVERAL ARRESTS, THE SEIZURE OF 9 GRAMS OF METHAMPHETAMINE, 30 POUNDS OF MARIJUANA AND $700 IN CASH LAST WEEK.

PROBATIONS AND WARRANT SEARCHES ON TUESDAY AND FRIDAY ENDED IN THE ARREST OF 50 YEAR OLD DARRELL COLLINS OF LUCERNE, AND SEVERAL OTHER SUBJECTS WHO WERE NOT IDENTIFIED. · A SANTA ROSA MAN WAS ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH THEFTS IN THE CLEARLAKE AREA LATE LAST WEEK.

30 YEAR OLD JEREMY LEE WHITE CAUGHT THE ATTENTION OF DEPUTIES BY APPEARING TO BE UNDER THE INFLUENCE WHILE OUTSIDE THE KONOCTI VISTA CASINO IN LAKEPORT AT AROUND 3 AM THURSDAY. A SEARCH OF HIS PERSON TURNED UP A SMALL AMOUNT OF METHAMPHETAMINE, AND A 200,000 VOLT TASER. IN A SEARCH OF HIS VEHICLE, DEPUTIES FOUND A GPS UNIT, A LAPTOP COMPUTER AND A LEATHER LAPTOP BAG THAT HAD BEEN REPORTED STOLEN IN THE CLEARLAKE AREA FEBRUARY 14TH. WHITE WAS FOUND TO BE ON BAIL FOR SEVERAL FELONY CASES PENDING AGAINST HIM IN BOTH LAKE AND SONOMA COUNTIES. AS A RESULT, HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE LAKE COUNTY JAIL WITH THE ENHANCED BAIL AMOUNT OF A QUARTER OF A MILLION DOLLARS.

IN LAKE COUNTY, HIGHWAY 29 BETWEEN BRADFORD AND ST HELENA IS CLOSED. ALSO, HIGHWAY 175, CHAINS ARE REQUIRED. UP TO 28 INCHES OF SNOW FELL IN SOME PARTS OF LAKE COUNTY, CLOSING SCHOOLS, NUMEROUS ROADS, DOWNING POWER AND PHONE LINES AND TOPPLING TREES. THE CHP RECORDED MORE THAN 100 TRAFFIC IMPACTING INCIDENTS, AND EMERGENCY RESPONDERS WERE OVERWHELMED AT THE NUMBER OF CALLS FOR ASSISTANCE. THE STORMS KNOCKED OUT POWER TO AN ESTIMATED 16,000 LAKE COUNTY RESIDENTS. THE SNOW LEVEL IN LAKE COUNTY WILL HOVER RIGHT AROUND THE 2000 FOOT MARK TODAY, BUT LITTLE OR NO SNOW ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED.

  • A SACRAMENTO MAN DIED AFTER HIS BOAT CAPSIZED IN BODEGA BAY WHILE FISHING FOR CRAB ON THURSDAY.

THE BODY OF 65 YEAR OLD MANUAL SILVA SILVEIRA WAS RECOVERED JUST BEFORE 5 PM NEAR PINNACLE GULCH BEACH. INVESTIGATORS SAY SILVEIRA HAD LAUNCHED HIS 15 FOOT FIBERGLASS BOAT FROM THE HARBOR DESPITE WARNINGS OF ROUGH AND WINDY CONDITIONS ON THE WATER. WAVES WERE ESTIMATED AT BETWEEN 12 AND 15 FEET WITH WINDS BETWEEN 25 AND 30 KNOTTS. HIS SMALL BOAT SWAMPED AND CAPSIZED NEAR THE SURF LINE, AND HE DIED, DESPITE WEARING A LIFE JACKET. THE EXACT CAUSE OF DEATH HAS NOT YET BEEN DETERMINED.

SEXUAL ASSAULT SUSPECT SOUGHT JKB 2/18/11

  • SANTA ROSA POLICE ARE LOOKING FOR THE SUSPECT IN A SEXUAL ASSAULT THAT ALLEGEDLY OCCURRED IN THE 300 BLOCK OF STONY POINT ROAD TUESDAY AFTERNOON.

ACCORDING TO THE 19 YEAR OLD VICTIM, A MASKED MAN DRESSED ALL IN BLACK, FORCED HIS WAY INTO THE RESIDENCE AT AROUND 1 PM AND SEXUALLY ASSAULTED HER. THE SUSPECT IS DESCRIBED AS A MALE ADULT, 5 FOOT 8 INCHES TALL WITH A MEDIUM ATHLETIC BUILD. HE WAS WEARING A BLACK SKI MASK, BLACK LONG SLEEVED SHIRT, BLACK GLOVES, BLACK JEANS AND BLACK SHOES. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ABOUT THIS INCIDENT IS ASKED TO CONTACT THE SANTA ROSA POLICE DEPARTMENT.

  • THE FORT BRAGG POLICE DEPARTMENT MADE MORE ARRESTS YESTERDAY IN A CRACK DOWN FOLLOWING A WEEK OF INCREASED GANG ACTIVITY AND VIOLENCE THAT OCCURRED IN THE WAKE OF GANG RELATED BRAWL IN LATE JANUARY.

POLICE ARRESTED 6 JUVENILES FOR VARIOUS PROBATION VIOLATIONS YESTERDAY. SOME OF THE ARRESTS WERE MADE BASED ON INFORMATION OBTAINED FROM THE INVESTIGATION INTO SEVERAL INCIDENTS OF GANG VIOLENCE LAST WEEK. ROADWAY OPEN AGAIN AFTER FATAL CHP CRASH JKB 2/17/11

  • HIGHWAY 101 NEAR PIERCY IS OPEN AGAIN AFTER BEING SHUT DOWN IN BOTH DIRECTIONS AFTER A COLLISION THAT KILLED CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL OFFICER THOMAS ADAMS TUESDAY AFTERNOON.

TRAFFIC WAS BEING RE-ROUTED ONTO HIGHWAY 271 THROUGH PIERCY UNTIL JUST BEFORE NOON YESTERDAY. THE CHP DID RELEASE MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE CRASH, SAYING IT APPEARS THAT ADAMS MAY HAVE BEEN RESPONDING TO SOME SORT OF INCIDENT WHEN HE LOST CONTROL WHILE ROUNDING A RIGHT HAND CURVE IN THE ROAD IN WET CONDITIONS, TRAVELED ACROSS PAVED MEDIAN DIVIDER AND SLID SIDEWAYS INTO THE PATH OF A FULL SIZED PICK UP TRUCK AT 2:15 PM. THE TRUCK STRUCK THE DRIVERS SIDE OF ADAMS PATROL CAR AND HE DIED AT THE SCENE. THE DRIVER OF THE PICK UP AND A PASSENGER SUFFERED ONLY MINOR INJURIES. THE INVESTIGATION IS CONTINUING.

HOUSE FIRE JKB 2/17/11

  • A FIRE DESTROYED A HOME ON OLD HIGHWAY 53 IN CLEARLAKE EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING.

FIREFIGHTERS GOT THE CALL AT 7:44 AM, BUT THE HOME WAS FULLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES BY THE TIME THEY ARRIVED 3 MINUTES LATER. ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS, THE RESIDENTS OF THE 600 SQUARE FOOT CABIN WERE IN THE PROCESS OF MOVING OUT, AND NO ONE WAS INSIDE THE HOME WHEN THE BLAZE BROKE OUT. THE INTERIOR OF THE HOME WAS CONSIDERED A TOTAL LOSS WITH DAMAGE ESTIMATES AT AROUND $70,000.

MISSING HUMBOLDT MAN FOUND JKB 2/17/11

  • A SOUTHERN HUMBOLDT COUNTY MAN WHO WAS REPORTED MISSING AND BELIEVED TO BE AT RISK, WAS FOUND SAFE AND SOUND IN CENTRAL CALIFORNIA YESTERDAY.

KYLE WHITNEY WAS REPORTED MISSING BY FAMILY MEMBERS FEBRUARY 9TH. DEPUTIES PERFORMING A WELL FARE CHECK FOUND FOOLD LEFT ON THE STOVE AND ALL OF HIS BELONGING AT HIS SALMON CREEK HOME. FAMILY MEMBERS REPORTED WHITNEY HAD MADE A DISTRESSED PHONE CALL ON JANUARY 23RD, AND HE HAD NOT BEEN SEEN SINCE. A TURLOCK POLICE OFFICER SPOTTED WHITNEYS VEHICLE ON WEDNESDAY MORNING, AND LOCATED THE MISSING MAN A SHORT TIME LATER. WHITNEY TOLD POLICE THAT HE HAD VOLUNTARILY LEFT HIS HOME DUE TO PERSONAL REASONS.

MOSQUITO CONTROL IN LAKE COUNTY JKB 2/17/11

  • SPRAYING TO CONTROL MOSQUITO POPULATIONS IN LAKE COUNTY IS SCHEDULED TO TAKE PLACE OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS.

THE LAKE COUNTY VECTOR CONTROL DISTRICT WILL USE LOW FLYING CROP DUSTERS WILL BEING SPRAYING LAKESIDE MARSHLANDS BETWEEN CLEAR LAKE STATE PARK AND LAKEPORT. ACCORDING TO VECTOR CONTROL OFFICIALS, LESS TOXIC LARVICIDES WILL BE USED TO TARGET THE MOSQUITO LARVAE, AND THE SPRAY WILL NOT HARM PLANTS, PEOPLE OR OTHER ANIMALS. THE ACTUAL DATES OF THE SPRAYING WILL DEPEND ON WEATHER CONDITIONS.

CHP OFFICER KILLED IN CRASH JKB 2/16/11

  • A CHP OFFICER WAS KILLED IN A HEAD ON COLLISION NEAR PIERCY YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.

ACCORDING TO A PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE GARBERVILLE AREA CHP OFFICE, 24 YEAR OLD PATROL OFFICER THOMAS ADAMS WAS DRIVING HIS PATROL CAR NORTHBOUND ON HIGHWAY 101 JUST SOUTH OF THE HUMBOLDT COUNTY LINE WHEN FOR UNKNOWN REASONS, HE CROSSED OVER THE PAVED DIVIDING SECTION AND INTO THE ONCOMING LANE OF TRAFFIC AT 2:15 PM. HE COLLIDED HEAD ON WITH A FULL SIZED PICK UP TRUCK BEING DRIVEN BY 39 YEAR OLD JEFF KIDD OF PERRIS CALIFORNIA. OFFICER ADAMS SUFFERED FATAL INJURIES AND DIED AT THE SCENE. KIDD AND A 31 YEAR OLD MALE PASSENGER IN HIS TRUCK SUSTAINED ONLY MINOR INJURIES. THEY WERE TAKEN TO JEROLD PHELPS HOSPITAL, TREATED AND RELEASED. THE ROADWAY WAS CLOSED AS OFFICERS CONDUCTED THEIR INVESTIGATION AND TRAFFIC WAS DETOURED ONTO HIGHWAY 271 THROUGH PIERCY. THE ACCIDENT REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION AND MORE INFORMATION WILL BE RELEASED AS IT BECOMES AVAILABLE.

FIRE DESTROYS UKIAH HOME JKB 2/16/11

  • A FIRE DESTROYED A HOME AND THREATENED TWO OTHERS ON SOUTH DORA STREET JUST SOUTH OF THOMPSON AVENUE LATE YESTERDAY MORNING.

THE FIRE WAS REPORTED AT 11:47 AM AND THE FIRST ENGINE ARRIVED JUST 4 MINUTES LATER. INITIAL REPORTS INDICATED THAT THERE WERE POSSIBLY PEOPLE TRAPPED INSIDE THE HOME, BUT FIREFIGHTERS WERE TOLD THAT ALL RESIDENTS AND PETS HAD BEEN ABLE TO ESCAPE PRIOR TO THEIR ARRIVAL. DESPITE THE QUICK RESPONSE TIME THE HOME WAS HEAVILY INVOLVED IN FLAMES AND HAD BEGUN TO DAMAGE A NEIGHBORING HOUSE. QUICK ACTION BY FIREFIGHTERS KEPT THE ADJACENT HOME FROM SUFFERING TOO MUCH DAMAGE AND FROM SPREADING TO OTHER NEARBY STRUCTURES. ACCORDING TO INVESTIGATORS, THE FIRE APPEARS TO HAVE STARTED OUTSIDE THE HOME. THE EXACT CAUSE OF THE FIRE REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION BUT IS NOT BELIEVED TO BE SUSPICIOUS.

  • THE GEYSERS WERE SHAKEN BY A 3.0 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON, THE 3RD QUAKE 3.0 OR LARGER TO STRIKE THE AREA SINCE THE FIRST OF THE YEAR.

THE QUAKE OCCURRED AT 3:38 PM AND WAS CENTERED 2 MILES NORTH OF THE STEAM FIELDS.

SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT LAYOFFS DELAYED FOR NOW JKB 2/16/11

  • A PROPOSAL TO LAYOFF ANOTHER 6 POSITIONS IN THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT HAS COME TO AN END FOR NOW AT LEAST.

THE DECISION TO STAY THE LAYOFFS PROPOSED BY COUNTY CEO CARMEL ANGELO WAS MADE AFTER IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE ACTION COULD LEAD TO AN EXPENSIVE LEGAL BATTLE, OFFSETTING ANY POSSIBLE SAVINGS. SHERIFF TOM ALLMAN, WHO EARLIER SAID THAT HE HAD RETAINED OUTSIDE LEGAL COUNCIL TOLD SUPERVISORS YESTERDAY THAT HE WOULD NOT PARTICIPATE IN ANY MORE LAYOFFS IN HIS DEPARTMENT. ALLMAN SAID EARLIER IN THE WEEK THAT HE BELIEVED ADDITIONAL LAYOFFS WOULD COMPROMISE PUBLIC SAFETY. COUNTY COUNSEL JEANINE NADEL TOLD SUPERVISORS THAT WHETHER THE COUNTY WON OR LOST ANY LITIGATED OUTCOME, IT WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR BOTH THE PROSECUTION AND DEFENSE COSTS.

MAN ARRESTED FOR THREATS JKB 2/16/11

  • A REDWOOD VALLEY MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER THREATENING TO KILL HIS MOTHER AND BURN DOWN HER HOUSE YESTERDAY.

THE VICTIM CALLED POLICE AT AROUND 6:30 PM AND TOLD DEPUTIES THAT SHE HAD FOUND A THREATENING NOTE FROM HER SON ON HER FRONT PORCH STEP THAT STATED HE WAS GOING TO BURN DOWN HER HOUSE. DEPUTIES CONTACTED 26 YEAR OLD ROBERT RODRICK, WHO LIVED IN A CAMP TRAILER ON THE SAME PROPERTY AND FOUND HIM TO BE INCOHERENT AND RAMBLING ABOUT HIS MOTHER. AT ONE POINT DURING THE INTERVIEW, RODRICK STATED HE WAS GOING TO KILL HIS MOTHER. THE DEPUTIES INFORMED RODRICK THAT HE WAS BEING PLACED UNDER ARREST FOR CRIMINAL THREATS AND ATTEMPTED TO HANDCUFF HIM, BUT HE PULLED AWAY AND ATTEMPTED TO RUN INSIDE HIS TRAILER. HE WAS SUBDUED AFTER A BRIEF STRUGGLE AND TAKEN INTO CUSTODY. HE WAS BOOKED INTO THE COUNTY JAIL FOR THE THREATS AND RESISTING ARREST. HIS BAIL WAS SET AT $30,000.

  • GOVERNOR JERRY BROWN HAS ORDERED A STATEWIDE GOVERNMENTAL HIRING FREEZE TO HELP CURB THE STATES $25 BILLION DOLLAR BUDGET DEFICIT.

THE HIRING FREEZE APPLIES TO VACANT, SEASONAL, FULL AND PART TIME POSITIONS. IT ALSO PROHIBITS THE HIRING OF OUTSIDE CONTRACTORS TO CIRCUMVENT THE HIRING FREEZE ORDER, THE CONVERSION OF PART TIME POSITIONS INTO FULL TIME POSITIONS OR THE TRANSFERRING OF EMPLOYEES BETWEEN AGENCIES AND DEPARTMENT. THE MOVE IS PART OF THE GOVERNORS EFFORT TO SAVE MONEY THIS FISCAL YEAR AND CUT $363 MILLION DOLLARS IN OPERATION COSTS NEXT FISCAL YEAR.

  • THE UKIAH CITY COUNCIL WILL DISCUSS NEW PROCEDURES FOR PICKING A MAYOR AND VICE MAYOR AT THEIR MEETING TONIGHT.

THE COUNCIL WILL CONSIDER ADOPTING A RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE TO CLARIFY THE SENIORITY ROTATION, BASED ON A RECENT SURVEY OF OTHER CALIFORNIA CITIES GUIDELINES.
