PLANNING COMMISSION MEETING ON COSTCO EIR (GOV) JH 10/31/13

THE UKIAH PLANNING COMMISSION WILL REVIEW THE FINAL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT REPORT FOR A PLANNED COSTCO IN UKIAH AT NEXT MONTHS MEETING.

THE COMMISSION WILL DECIDE WHETHER TO CERTIFY THE EIR AND APPROVE THE REZONING OF THE PROPOSED SITE FOR THE STORE, WHICH IS JUST OVER 15 ACRES ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF KEN FOWLER MOTORS ON AIRPORT PARK BOULEVARD. IF THE EIR IS CERTIFIED BY THE COMMISSION, IT WILL THEN MOVE ON TO THE CITY COUNCIL FOR CERTIFICATION. FROM THERE, THE COMMISSION WILL CONSIDER THE SITE DEVELOPMENT PERMIT FOR THE PROJECT. CAL FIRE CONTROL BURN TODAY (PI) JH 10/31/13

CAL FIRE WILL CONDUCT A VEGETATION MANAGEMENT CONTROL BURN TODAY ON PRIVATELY-OWNED LAND IN NORTHERN MENDOCINO COUNTY.

THE PURPOSE OF THE BURN IS TO REINTRODUCE FIRE AS A NATURAL ELEMENT OF THE ECOSYSTEM, IMPROVE WILDLIFE HABITAT, AND REDUCE THE OVERALL FUEL LOAD TO DECREASE THE CHANCE OF CATASTROPHIC WILDFIRES IN THE FUTURE. THE BURN WILL BE ON THE SHAMROCK RANCH BEGINNING AT 1 PM.

TWO PEOPLE FOUND DEAD IN MINIVAN NEAR FORT BRAGG WERE SHOT (LAW) JH 10/30/13

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE ANNOUNCED ON TUESDAY THAT THE TWO BAY AREA RESIDENTS THAT WERE FOUND DEAD IN A MINIVAN ON HIGHWAY 20 NEAR FORT BRAGG, HAD EACH BEEN SHOT ONCE IN THE HEAD.

AUTHORITIES ARE STILL WAITING FOR TOXICOLOGY AND BLOOD-ALCOHOL RESULTS FROM THE AUTOPSIES, AND NO OTHER DETAILS ABOUT THE KILLINGS HAVE BEEN RELEASED AT THIS TIME. LAKESIDE HEIGHTS HOME COLLAPSES (PI) JH 10/30/13

A HOME COLLAPSED ON MONDAY IN THE LAKEPORT SUBDIVISION WHERE SEVERAL HOMES WERE DAMAGED BY LANDSLIDE EARLIER THIS YEAR.

THE HOME THAT COLLAPSED HAD BEEN HALFWAY SUSPENDED ON THE HILLSIDE AFTER PART OF ITS FLOOR HAD ALREADY FALLEN OFF. MONDAY, THE BACK HALF OF THE HOME SPLIT OFF AND SLID DOWN THE HILLSIDE. TWO HOMES WERE DEMOLISHED EARLIER THIS MONTH, AND AS PART OF AN EFFORT TO WINTERIZE AND STABILIZE THE HILLSIDE, IT HAS BEEN COVERED WITH TARPS. AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE PASSING OF COUNTERFEIT MONEY AT A HANDFUL OF FORTUNA BUSINESSES WAS AIDED BY THE UNITED STATES SECRET SERVICE, AND JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT MONDAY, POLICE SERVED A SEARCH WARRANT AT A RESIDENCE ON ROHNERVILLE ROAD. 22 YEAR OLD JEREMY HERMAN, 19 YEAR OLD BRITTANY WALTRIP, AND 48 YEAR OLD KIM HUSE, ALL OF FORTUNA WERE ARRESTED, AND AUTHORITIES SEIZED ABOUT $2,000 IN FAKE $100 AND $20 BILLS, AS WELL AS PRINTERS, A COMPUTER AND OTHER EQUIPMENT USED TO MANUFACTURE THE COUNTERFEIT MONEY. AN 18 YEAR OLD UKIAH MAN WAS ARRESTED FOR ALLEGEDLY SEXUALLY ASSAULTING A TEENAGE GIRL IN McGARVEY PARK LAST WEEK.

ACCORDING TO POLICE, A 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL WAS HANGING OUT WITH FRIENDS AT THE ALEX THOMAS PLAZA DOWNTOWN, WHEN AN OLDER TEEN IN THE GROUP, 18 YEAR OLD GUADALUPE GARCIA JR, OFFERED TO WALK HER HOME. WHEN THE TWO REACHED McGARVEY PARK GARCIA REPORTEDLY BEGAN KISSING THE GIRL AND FORCING HIS HANDS UNDER HER CLOTHING WHILE HOLDING HER AND PREVENTING HER FROM ESCAPING. THE SUSPECT ALSO EXPOSED HIMSELF TO HER. AT SOME POINT THE GIRL ESCAPED AND CALLED POLICE, AND GARCIA FLED INTO A VEHICLE. POLICE LATER LOCATED THE VEHICLE AND GARCIA AND HE WAS BOOKED INTO MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL ON MULTIPLE CHARGES. ACCORDING TO COURT RECORDS, AT THE TIME OF THIS INCIDENT, GARCIA WAS OUT ON BAIL FOR ALLEGED BURGLARY CHARGES.

A KELSEYVILLE MAN WHO WAS CONVICTED OF HAVING SEX WITH A YOUNG TEENAGE GIRL WAS SENTENCED TO STATE PRISON YESTERDAY.

22 YEAR OLD BRIAN BARRETT STASKO FACED 5 TO 10 YEARS IN PRISON FOR MULTIPLE SEXUAL CHARGES AGAINST A 13 YEAR OLD GIRL. THOUGH ORIGINALLY ACCUSED OF AGGRAVATED SEXUAL ASSAULT, THE JURY DECIDED THAT THE ACTS WERE NOT COMMITTED BY FORCE AND FOUND HIM GUILTY OF STATUTORY RAPE. STASKO WAS SENTENCED TO 8 YEARS IN STATE PRISON.

A TRAFFIC STOP TURNED INTO A DRUG BUST WHEN AUTHORITIES FOUND SEVERAL HUNDRED POUNDS OF MARIJUANA IN A U-HAUL TRUCK.

21-YEAR-OLD JORGE TELLEZ OF REEDLEY IN FRESNO COUNTY WAS DRIVING EASTBOUND ON HIGHWAY 20 IN CLEARLAKE OAKS WHEN HE ALLOWED HIS U-HAUL TRUCK TO CROSS THE DOUBLE YELLOW LINES. A SHERIFFS DEPUTY PULLED TELLEZ OVER AND NOTICED A STRONG ODOR OF POT. WHEN ASKED WHAT WAS IN THE TRUCK, TELLEZ CONFIRMED HE WAS CARRYING BOXES OF BUD. DEPUTIES REMOVED OVER 250 POUNDS OF MARIJUANA FROM THE TRUCK, AND TELLEZ WAS BOOKED INTO LAKE COUNTY JAIL.

SEVERAL NEIGHBORS REPORTED SEEING SMOKE COMING FROM A HOME ON TOKAY AVENUE SATURDAY AFTERNOON. THANKS TO THE QUICK RESPONSE OF FIREFIGHTERS, THEY WERE ABLE TO STOP THE FLAMES IN THE GARAGE BEFORE THEY SPREAD TO THE REST OF THE HOME. THE FAMILY HAD BEEN OUT TO DINNER, BUT THEIR COCKER SPANIEL WAS HOME ALONE WHEN THE BLAZE STARTED. FIREFIGHTERS REMOVED THE DOG FROM THE HOME SHAKEN BUT UNSCATHED.

A MOTHER AND HERE 8 YEAR OLD SON WERE INJURED IN A SUNDAY CAR CRASH ON HIGHWAY 20.

33-YEAR-OLD ESMERALDA VILLAPANDO OF UKIAH WAS DRIVING EASTBOUND JUST EAST OF CHAMBERLIN CREEK WHEN SHE FAILED TO NEGOTIATE A CURVE IN THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE LEFT THE ROAD HITTING A TREE CAUSING MAJOR DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. BOTH THE DRIVER AND HER 8 YEAR OLD SON JULIAN HAD TO EXTRICATED BY CAL FIRE WITH THE HELP OF A GOOD SAMARITAN. THE DRIVER WAS FLOWN TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, AND THE CHILD WAS FLOWN TO OAKLANDS CHILDRENS HOSPITAL.

EDWARDS HARLEY DAVIDSON HIT THE FRONT OF NORGARDS VEHICLE AND EDWARDS WAS THROWN OVER THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE. EDWARDS WAS FLOWN TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WITH MODERATE INJURIES. NORGARD WAS TAKEN TO UKIAH VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER WITH MINOR INJURIES.

ALL 13 MEN ARE ACCUSED OF CONSPIRING TOGETHER, AND WITH ANOTHER PERSON WHOSE IDENTITY IS UNKNOWN, TO ILLEGALLY HARVEST ABALONE FROM THE MENDOCINO COAST, MUCH OF IT FOR COMMERCIAL PURPOSES. ALL THIRTEEN MEN PLEADED NOT GUILTY, AND ARE DUE BACK IN COURT IN JANUARY.

A FIRE EARLY SUNDAY MORNING DESTROYED A CLEARLAKE HOME AND THREATENED SEVERAL OTHER STRUCTURES.

THE BLAZE ON OAKLAND AVENUE WAS REPORTED JUST BEFORE 1:30 AM. BY THE TIME FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED ON SCENE, THE HOME WAS FULLY ENGULFED AND CAUSED POWER LINES TO FALL NEAR RIDGE ROAD. FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE TO GET THE BLAZE UNDER CONTROL IN ABOUT 25 MINUTES WHILE STOPPING THE FLAMES FROM SPREADING TO SEVERAL NEARBY STRUCTURES, HOWEVER, THE HOME WAS A TOTAL LOSS. THE WOMAN LIVING IN THE HOME WAS ABLE TO ESCAPE UNHARMED. CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

A LAKE COUNTY VETERINARIAN REPORTED SEEING MORE PARVO CASES THIS MONTH THAN HE HAS SEEN IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS COMBINED.

PARVOVIRUS , WHICH MOSTLY AFFECTS YOUNG DOGS, IS HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS AND CAN BE DEADLY. IT ATTACKS RAPIDLY DIVIDING CELLS IN A DOGS BODY AND AFFECTS THE INTESTINAL TRACT VERY SEVERELY. THE VETERINARY CLINIC, THAT NORMALLY SEES A COUPLE OF CASES A YEAR, HAS SEEN BETWEEN 15 AND 20 CASES IN THE LAST 30 DAYS. PARVO CAN BE TRANSMITTED BY PERSON, ANIMAL OR ANY OBJECT THAT COMES IN CONTACT WITH DOG FECES, HOWEVER, PEOPLE AND CATS CANNOT BECOME INFECTED. 36-YEAR-OLD CASIMIR GEORGE JANUSZ TOOK HIS UNRESPONSIVE BOY TO THE HOSPITAL THE MORNING OF OCTOBER 16TH.. AFTER IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE CHILD WAS DEAD, JANUSZ LEFT THE HOSPITAL WITHOUT EXPLANATION. JANUSZ REPORTEDLY DROVE TO HIS FAMILIES RANCH IN HOPLAND, WHERE HE ABANDONED HIS VEHICLE AND DISAPPEARED. NO ONE HAS SEEN OR HEARD FROM HIM SINCE, AND HIS FAMILY HAS REPORTED HIM MISSING. AUTHORITIES HAVE SEARCHED FOR JANUSZ WITH NO RESULTS. ACCORDING TO THE FACILITIES EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, SHE PLANS TO START OFFERING GROUP THERAPY IN NOVEMBER FOR THE ROUGHLY 22 PERCENT OF THE SHELTERS RESIDENTS WHO ARE CONSIDERED DUAL-DIAGNOSIS BECAUSE THEY NOT ONLY HAVE A SUBSTANCE ABUSE ISSUE, BUT ARE ALSO MENTALLY ILL. GROUP THERAPY SESSIONS ENDED IN 2010 WHEN THE COUNTY-RUN MENTAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT STOPPED FUNDING THE SERVICE AND OFFERING COUNTY STAFF TO RUN THE SESSIONS BECAUSE OF BUDGET CUTS. A LAKE COUNTY JUDGE ON THURSDAY, ORDERED A CLEARLAKE MAN TO STAND TRIAL FOR THE ATTEMPTED MURDER OF A CLEARLAKE POLICE OFFICER.

53-YEAR-OLD DANIEL ALAN YORK IS ALLEGED TO HAVE USED AN SUV TO RAM A CLEARLAKE POLICE OFFICER AFTER THE OFFICER PULLED YORK OVER. ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, YORK SLAMMED HIS VEHICLE INTO THE OFFICER, PINNING HIM AGAINST A TRUCK AND CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY TO THE OFFICER. ACCORDING TO THE DA, IF CONVICTED, YORK COULD FACE AT LEAST 35 YEARS TO LIFE IN PRISON, IN PART DUE TO PREVIOUS STRIKES AND PRISON TERMS.

TWO YOUNG BROTHERS FROM FORT BRAGG DIED TUESDAY EVENING AFTER THEY CRASHED AN ATV ON THE PROPERTY WHERE THEY LIVED.

ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, THE BOYS WERE 8 AND 6 YEARS OLD, WITH THE OLDER BROTHER DRIVING THE ALL-TERRAIN VEHICLE. THE BOYS WERE RIDING NORTHBOUND IN A PASTURE WHEN THE ATV HIT A DIRT EMBANKMENT AND BECAME AIRBORNE. WHEN THE VEHICLE LANDED ON ITS FRONT END, THE DRIVER LOST CONTROL AND THE PASSENGER WAS THROWN OFF, WITH THE DRIVER ALSO FALLING OFF MOMENTS LATER. THE PASSENGER AND YOUNGER BROTHER WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE. THE DRIVER, AND OLDER BROTHER WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE MENDOCINO COAST HOSPITAL, WHERE HE LATER DIED. THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE DOES NOT WANT TO RELEASE THE NAMES OF THE BOYS UNTIL THE INVESTIGATION IS COMPLETE.

A MURDER SUSPECT FROM OREGON WAS ARRESTED IN WILLITS ON TUESDAY.

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT RECEIVED A PHONE CALL FROM POLICE IN SPRINGFIELD, OREGON AND WERE ASKED FOR ASSISTANCE IN THE CAPTURE OF AN ALLEGED HOMICIDE SUSPECT WHO WAS CURRENTLY KNOWN TO BE AT A RESIDENCE ON PRIMROSE DRIVE IN WILLITS. DEPUTIES LOCATED THE SUSPECT, 23 YEAR OLD SEAN PATRICK KELLEY, AT THE RESIDENCE AND TOOK HIM INTO CUSTODY. KELLEY WILL REMAIN AT THE MENDOCINO COUNTY JAIL PENDING EXTRADITION TO OREGON.

ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, THE VICTIM HAD MADE A DRUG TRADE OF MARIJUANA FOR METH ON SATURDAY WITH TWO ACQUAINTANCES, KNOWN ONLY AS CAROLINA AND EDUARDO. ON SUNDAY, CAROLINA RETURNED IN A CREAM COLORED CADILLAC ESCALADE WITH TWO OTHER HISPANIC MEN. ALL THREE SUSPECTS PULLED GUNS ON THE VICTIM AND A FRIEND OF THE VICTIM AND TIED THEM UP, WHILE STEALING $2,000 IN CASH, A HALF OUNCE OF METHAMPHETAMINE, AND SEVERAL DOZEN POUNDS OF POT. THE VICTIM DESCRIBED CAROLINA AS A HISPANIC FEMALE APPROXIMATELY 30 YEARS OLD, 5 FEET 6 INCHES TALL WITH LONG BROWN HAIR AND BROWN EYES. THE SECOND SUSPECT WAS DESCRIBED AS APPROXIMATELY 30-YEAR-OLD MALE WITH WELL TRIMMED BROWN HAIR AND BROWN EYES. THE THIRD SUSPECT IS DESCRIBED AS A MALE APPROXIMATELY 45 YEARS OLD WITH FAIR SKIN AND A GOATEE. HE WORE A BASEBALL CAP WITH WELL GROOMED HAIR SLIGHTLY LONGER THAN SUSPECT NUMBER TWO. SONOMA COUNTY DEPUTIES SHOT AND KILLED A 13 YEAR OLD BOY TUESDAY AFTERNOON.

THOUGH POLICE HAVE NOT RELEASED THE NAME OF THE BOY, HIS FATHER RODRIGO LOPEZ IDENTIFIED THE TEEN AS ANDY LOPEZ, AND SAID THAT HE HAD BEEN CARRYING A TOY GUN THAT BELONGED TO A FRIEND. ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, TWO DEPUTIES PATROLLING THE AREA OF MOORLAND AND WEST ROBLES AVENUES SAW LOPEZ WALKING WITH WHAT APPEARED TO BE SOME TYPE OF RIFLE. THE DEPUTIES CALLED FOR BACKUP AND REPEATEDLY ORDERED THE BOY TO DROP THE RIFLE. AT SOME POINT, THE DEPUTIES FIRED SEVERAL ROUNDS AT THE LOPEZ, WHO WAS HIT MULTIPLE TIMES. THE DEPUTIES ADMINISTERED FIRST AID TO THE BOY WHILE CALLING FOR MEDICAL ASSISTANCE. LOPEZ WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE. AFTER SECURING THE SCENE, DEPUTIES DISCOVERED THE RIFLE THE TEEN WAS CARRYING WAS A REPLICA OF AN ASSAULT RIFLE, AND ALSO FOUND A PLASTIC HANDGUN IN THE TEENS WAISTBAND. THE SECOND OF TWO VICTIMS FOUND DEAD IN A MINIVAN, PARKED ALONG HIGHWAY 20 OUTSIDE OF FORT BRAGG THURSDAY, HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED.

ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, THE MAN IN THE PASSENGER SEAT WAS IDENTIFIED AS 51-YEAR-OLD JIM TAT KONG OF SAN PABLO. THE WOMAN FOUND IN THE DRIVERS SEAT WAS IDENTIFIED AS 38-YEAR-OLD CINDY BAO FENG CHEN, OF SAN FRANCISCO. BOTH VICTIMS WERE FOUND IN A VEHICLE PARKED ALONG HIGHWAY 20 OUTSIDE OF FORT BRAGG. THEY BOTH HAD HEAD WOUNDS, THOUGH THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT HAS NOT GIVEN FURTHER DETAIL AS THE INCIDENT IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION. A 5 YEAR OLD BOY PLAYING WITH MATCHES STARTED A FIRE AT ROBINSON RANCHERIA TUESDAY AFTERNOON.

THE FIRE WAS REPORTED JUST AFTER 5 PM BEHIND THE RECYCLING CENTER. BY THE TIME FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED ON SCENE, RESIDENTS HAD NEARLY EXTINGUISHED THE FLAMES WITH GARDEN HOSES AND SHOVELS. THE VEGETATION FIRE CHARRED LESS THAN A QUARTER ACRE, BUT DID COME WITHIN 10 FEET OF TWO HOMES. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED.

BY THE TIME FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED ON SCENE, THE MOBILE HOME WAS FULLY INVOLVED. THE OCCUPANTS WERE ABLE TO GET OUT WITH THEIR PETS, HOWEVER, THE HOME WAS A TOTAL LOSS. FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE TO CONFINE THE BLAZE TO THE HOME AND KEEP IT FROM SPREADING INTO WILDLAND. RED-CROSS WAS CALLED IN TO ASSIST THE DISPLACED RESIDENTS.

THE DRIVER IN A MONDAY AFTERNOON COLLISION ON HIGHWAY 20 IS SUSPECTED OF DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE.

30-YEAR-OLD NIKISHA WILLIAMS OF CLEARLAKE WAS DRIVING ON HIGHWAY 20 WEST OF THE HIGHWAYS 20 AND 29 INTERSECTION WHEN SHE SIDESWIPED SEMI BEFORE CRASHING INTO A VAN. WILLIAMS VEHICLE WAS TOTALED, AND SHE WAS ARRESTED FOR SUSPICION OF DUI, BEFORE BEING FLOWN TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL WITH MAJOR INJURIES. THE SEMI DRIVER WAS UNINJURED, BUT 42-YEAR-OLD ERIC CAHILL, WHO WAS DRIVING THE VAN, SUFFERED MODERATE INJURIES. THE COLLISION IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

FORT BRAGG POLICE SEEK A SUSPECT WHO ALLEGEDLY SHOT INTO PG&E ELECTRICAL SUBSTATION EQUIPMENT.

POLICE RESPONDED TO GROVE STREET SATURDAY AFTERNOON FOR A REPORT OF SHOTS BEING FIRED INTO THE EQUIPMENT. NEIGHBORHOOD RESIDENTS ADVISED ARRIVING OFFICERS THAT THE SUSPECT FLED INTO THE WOODS. A SEARCH OF THE AREA REVEALED A GIANT BRAND BICYCLE AND A BLUE, FOX BRAND RIDING JACKET REPORTED TO BELONG TO THE SUSPECT. OFFICERS RECOVERED SIX EXPENDED SHOTGUN SHELLS IN THE STREET. IT ALL STARTED WHEN CHP TRIED TO PULL STEELE OVER FOR SUSPECTED DUI ON HIGHWAY 29 NEAR CRUIKSHANK ROAD. CAL FIRE MENDOCINO UNIT WILL BE CONDUCTING A VEGETATION MANAGEMENT CONTROL BURN TODAY IN THE NORTHERN PORTION OF MENDOCINO COUNTY.

THE FIRST FIRE WAS REPORTED JUST BEFORE 1 PM UNDER THE BRIDGE NEAR RIVER STREET. WHEN FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED ON SCENE, THEY ALSO DISCOVERED TWO SPOT FIRES BURNING ALONG THE FREEWAY, IN ADDITION TO THE FIRST FIRE. AND A FOURTH FIRE WAS REPORTED NEAR CALPELLA, JUST OFF THE FREEWAY EXIT. FIREFIGHTERS HAD ALL FOUR FIRES UNDER CONTROL FAIRLY QUICKLY, WITH LESS THAN FIVE ACRES CHARRED, THANKS TO AID FROM SEVERAL DEPARTMENTS. FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE TO CONFINE THE BLAZE TO THE GARBAGE AREA PREVENTING DAMAGE TO THE BUILDING. FOUR HOURS LATER, AT ABOUT 6:30 AM, MORE FLAMES WERE SEEN, THIS TIME ON THE ROOF OF THE PARK PLACE RESTAURANT ON THIRD STREET. THE FIRE WAS CONFINED TO A ROOFTOP VENT, THAT HAD TO BE CUT INTO TO EXTINGUISH THE FLAMES. THE RESTAURANT IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED DUE TO SMOKE DAMAGE AND THE HOLE IN THE ROOF. THE KARUK AND YUROK TRIBES WILL INSTALL OVER 82 MILES OF FIBER OPTIC CABLE FROM ORLEANS TO HUMBOLDT BAY THANKS TO THE FUNDING OF THE KLAMATH RIVER RURAL BROADBAND INITIATIVE PROJECT. DEPUTIES CHECKED THE INTERIOR OF THE VAN AND DISCOVERED A DECEASED FEMALE IN THE FRONT DRIVERS SEAT AND A DECEASED MALE IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. HE TOOK A SHOT AT THE PIG, BUT WHEN HE WENT TO THE AREA WHERE HE LAST SAW THE PIG, HE LOCATED 52-YEAR-OLD EDGARDO GODOY OF RODEO CALIFORNIA WITH A GUNSHOT WOUND TO THE ABDOMEN. THE HUNTER IMMEDIATELY RENDERED AID TO THE VICTIM AND CALLED FOR HELP ON A RADIO. OTHER HUNTERS QUICKLY ARRIVED AND ASSISTED IN THE FIRST AID WHILE MOVING THE VICTIM TO A ROAD TO MEET EMERGENCY MEDICAL PERSONNEL FROM CAL FIRE AND THE NATIONAL FOREST SERVICE. A SHORT TIME LATER, CAL STAR LANDED TO ASSIST, AND THE VICTIM WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD. NAMES OF WITNESSES AND THOSE INVOLVED ARE CURRENTLY BEING WITHHELD AS THE INVESTIGATION INTO THE INCIDENT CONTINUES.

BARN BURNS ON OLD RIVER ROAD (LAW) JH 10/21/13

A LARGE BARN WAS DESTROYED WHEN A FIRE BROKE OUT EARLY SATURDAY MORNING ON OLD RIVER ROAD BETWEEN UKIAH AND HOPLAND.

THE BLAZE WAS REPORTED JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT BY A NEIGHBOR WHO SAW IT GLOWING. BY THE TIME FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED ON SCENE, THE STRUCTURE WAS FULLY ENGULFED. AUTHORITIES DESCRIBED THE BARN AS OLDER AND FILLED WITH GRAPE HARVESTING EQUIPMENT. NO ONE WAS INJURED IN THE FIRE, AND A NEARBY GARAGE AND HOME WERE NOT DAMAGED. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED, AND IS NOT BELIEVED TO BE SUSPICIOUS.

EARLY MORNING TRAFFIC STOP TURNS INTO SHOOTOUT (LAW)

A TRAFFIC STOP OF A SUSPECTED DUI DRIVER TURNED INTO A SHOOTOUT EARLY SATURDAY MORNING.

CHP OFFICERS PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER ON NORTHBOUND HIGHWAY 29 AT ABOUT 2:30 AM. THE SUSPECTS VEHICLE INITIALLY YIELDED ON THE SHOULDER BEFORE THE SUSPECTS ALLEGEDLY FIRED SEVERAL SHOTS AT OFFICERS AND THEN FLED NORTHBOUND. THE SUSPECTS SOON PULLED OVER AGAIN IN THE AREA OF LIVE OAK DRIVE, THEN MADE A U-TURN AND BEGAN SHOOTING AT OFFICERS AGAIN. A MALE SUBJECT, WHO POLICE SAID WAS IN THE SUSPECTS VEHICLE, EITHER JUMPED OR FELL OUT DURING THE PURSUIT, AND WAS INJURED AND AIRLIFTED TO SANTA ROSA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. THE DRIVER, LATER IDENTIFIED AS WILLIAM EDWARD STEELE OF HOPLAND, EVENTUALLY ABANDONED THE VEHICLE AND FLED ON FOOT. FOLLOWING A SEARCH WITH K-9 TEAMS AND A CHP HELICOPTER, STEELE WAS LOCATED AND TAKEN INTO CUSTODY.

LAKE COUNTY SUPERVISORS ARE HOSTING A PUBLIC WORKSHOP TOMORROW ON A HEALTHY LAKE ORDINANCE.

IF YOU HAVE SOLUTIONS TO KEEP CLEAR LAKE AND LAKE COUNTYS WATERSHED HEALTHY, YOU ARE INVITED TO SHARE YOUR IDEAS AT THIS PUBLIC WORKSHOP. THE HEALTHY LAKE ORDINANCE IS A PROPOSED HALF PERCENT SALES TAX INCREASE, SIMILAR TO LAST YEARS MEASURE E, WITH PROCEEDS GOING TO IMPROVE WATER QUALITY, PREVENT INVASIVE SPECIES AND ALLEVIATE WEEDS AND ALGAE IN THE LAKE. THE BOARD IS SEEKING PUBLIC INPUT TO FURTHER FINE TUNE THE ORDINANCE BEFORE INTRODUCING IT IN FORMAL SESSION AND VOTING WHETHER OR NOT TO PLACE THE ORDINANCE ON THE BALLOT. THE WORKSHOP IS SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22ND AT 10:25 AM IN THE BOARD CHAMBERS AT THE LAKE COUNTY COURT HOUSE IN LAKEPORT.

SEWER SMOKE TESTING WILL BE DONE IN FORT BRAGG THIS WEEK (PI)

THE CITY OF FORT BRAGG SEWER DEPARTMENT WILL BE SMOKE TESTING THE SEWER COLLECTION SYSTEM THIS WEEK IN AN EFFORT TO LIMIT THE COST OF SEWER TREATMENT PLANT EXPANSIONS THAT WILL BE NECESSARY OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS.

THE SMOKE TESTING WILL START AT THE SOUTH END OF TOWN WORKING NORTH. THE SMOKE IS NOT TOXIC AND WILL NOT HARM ANYONE. OCCASIONALLY SMOKE WILL COME OUT OF DRAINS IN HOUSES THAT ARE NOT PIPED PROPERLY. IF THIS HAPPENS AT YOUR HOUSE OR BUSINESS, IT IS SUGGESTED YOU CONTACT THE BUILDING INSPECTOR AND A PLUMBER TO FIX THE PROBLEM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. IF THE SMOKE GETS IN YOUR HOUSE SO WILL SEWER GASSES WHICH COULD BE TOXIC OR DETRIMENTAL IF THE RIGHT CONDITIONS EXIST.

THE MENDOCINO COUNTY COMMUNITY INNOVATIVE PLANNING MEETING FOR MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES ACT WILL BE TUESDAY IN BOONVILLE.
